If it wasn’t for Maxwell we would’ve lost against Afghanistan in last year’s T20 World Cup.
Since then he’s only played 1 international game, when he clearly wasn’t fit.
Provided he’s fit, I don’t know why anyone would be questioning his position in the team.
Marnus brought into World Cup squad after Head's hand diagnosis as Aussies thumped again by Proteas
Marsh averages 22 when batting 3 in ODIs.
Smith’s average at 3 is 55, Smith has batted at 3 in every ODI he’s played for the last 4 years
Marsh was never going to bat at 3 when Smith was available.
I’m not really sure why people assume that Marsh was going to bat 3 during the World Cup
Marnus brought into World Cup squad after Head's hand diagnosis as Aussies thumped again by Proteas
Smith averages 54 when batting at 3 compared to 35 when batting at 4.
Marsh averages 23 when batting at 3 in ODIs.
Smith has to bat 3 if fit.
Australia's best chance of winning World Cup trophy will come if selectors dump a couple of big names
If you’d watch him play last year you wouldn’t be saying that.
He played 6 ODIs in 2022, 7 wickets at 28, going at about about 5 an over.
I find it funny when people who clearly don’t watch alot of cricket complain that player x has been selector or that player y hasn’t
Warner returning to India: Selectors go back to the past in veteran-heavy Australian ODI squad
Will Pucovski: Gets concussion after being hit in the head by a soccer ball.
Random person on the internet who’s never seen him play shield cricket: ‘ItS BeCaUsE He cAnT PlAy tHe sHoRt bAlL.’
COMMENT: Cricket Australia must act now to save Will Pucovski from himself
How so?
He averaged 40 in the last test series he played.
WATCH: Tim Paine takes SIX catches for Tasmania's 2nd XI
Since his return to the test team in March 2017, Cummins has only missed 2 test matches.
'As far removed as you can get': Everything Bailey said on Marsh snub, Khawaja vs. Head, Pucovski's chances
Is Warne out of his mind?
Paine averaged 40 against India last summer but according to Warne he can’t make a run.
With these comments you get the sense that Warne doesn’t watch alot of cricket, it’s embarrassing that he gets paid to commentate.
Warne’s the reason I’ll be watching channel 7s coverage this summer.
Paine's 'shocker': Warne rips into skipper, delivers harsh verdict on Khawaja, Starc ahead of Ashes
So you want Paine dropped because his batting isn’t good enough, but you’re happy to pick Head?
Despite the fact that Paine out performed Head last summer?
The whole notion that Paine is a rubbish batsman is ridiculous. He averaged 40 against India last summer.
For context Wade averaged 21, Head averaged 20 and Warner averaged 16.
The way people carry on about, you’d think he was batting like Glenn McGrath.
Duck, duck, gone? Warner fails again; Australia thrashed in final T20 warm up
He captained NSW last season https://www.cricket.com.au/news/pat-cummins-named-nsw-blues-one-day-captain-australia-sheffield-shield-paine-finch-smith-victoria/2021-02-10
'An activity for sadists': Three hurdles Cummins must clear to become our first bowling captain in 65 years
Pretty sure they dropped Zampa, because he got smashed in the World Cup he played 4 games and went at more than 7 an over.
He doesn’t fill me with confidence going the tournament though.
Big selection call Aussies might regret, positive Warner verdict and legends' surprise final tip
I’m pretty sure Harris knows he sits behind Pucovski in the pecking order, he only played last summer when Pucovski got injured.
I’m sure Harris will be pretty happy to hear the test captain say that next in line.
'Devastated to hear it': Paine's update on Pucovski's latest 'shattering' concussion
I don’t really get the criticism of Paine’s batting, especially given that he’s been out performing both Wade and Head (admittedly thats not a high bar).
He averaged 40 against India last summer, and was man of the match in the only game Australia won all series.
England can win the Ashes. Maybe
I thought Tye bowled reasonably well over the last few games, wouldn’t make the first choice team when everyones available but he’s a decent backup.
Carey has done well in ODI but struggles in t20 (probably because he has more time to build and innings in an ODI.)
Wade can’t bat in the middle order, he’s a backup opener at best.
Handscombs a decent shout especially with the world cup being played in the UAE.
Christian hit a quickfire 20 in one of the t20s against the west Indies. Surprised he hasn’t played since.
I’m worries they’re going to slot stoinis back into the middle order.
Australia humbled again by Bangladesh
Smith really needs to be batting at 3, he averages 39 when batting 3, compared to 20 when batting 4.
Doesn’t make sense to bat one of your key players out of their best position to fit in an extra opener.
We did this with the odi world cup in 2019, Smith got pushed down to 4 to accomodate Khawaja at 3 and it didn’t work.
Australia should rotate their top six during the Caribbean and Bangladesh tours
Smiths played 45 T20Is, the first 20 of those were in 2010-11 when he was viewed as bowling all rounder batting at 7/8.
Those numbers are hardly relevant to a guy batting at 3.
T20 World Cup middle-order spots are up for grabs in the West Indies
His record at 3 is pretty solid, average of 39, strike rate of 141.
Good player to anchor the innings.
T20 World Cup middle-order spots are up for grabs in the West Indies
All of the Aussie players that weren’t picked in the World Cup squad, or playing county cricket we’re picking to play for Australia A in some warm up games, while the World Cup was going on.

Could Australia’s short Ashes preparation work in their favour?
Would you have left Smith and Cummins out of the 2019 World Cup team, so that they could play more red ball cricket to prepare for the Ashes?
Could Australia’s short Ashes preparation work in their favour?
Why on earth would you pay 2 of your best players to not play in a World Cup? What a ridiculous idea.
Could Australia’s short Ashes preparation work in their favour?
I’m pretty sure that CA is using the Afghanistan test as a warmup for the Ashes, it’ll give all the guys who are in the T20 World Cup squad a hit against the red ball. I think that it’ll be adequate preparation.
Last summer Smith, Cummins and Hazelwood had no red ball preparation for the India series as they were at the IPL, they were 3 of Australia’s best performers for the series.
While Starc, Lyon, Head, Wade and Burns all played in the shield and they underperformed.
Cricket Australia need to get it right for the next summer
I doubt Hazlewood will even be in the Twenty20 squad, seeing as Kane Richardson has established himself as the 3rd choice quick, behind Starc and Cummins.
The likes of Behrendorff, Tye, Sams and NCN are all adequate backup options.
Cricket Australia need to get it right for the next summer
Stoinis being in Australia’s best T20 XI is debatable he’s had 1 good knock for Australia in about 3 years.
Marsh, Henriques or Philippe should get a contract ahead of him.
Cricket Australia contract list: Who’s in and who’s out?
First Class bowling record of Australia’s spin options:
Lyon: 609 wickets at 33.98
Zampa: 105 wickets at 48.26
Agar: 150 wickets at 41.09
Swepson: 140 wickets at 33.95
Holland: 250 wickets at 32.92
Labuchagne: 59 wickets at 44.83
Maxwell: 77 wickets at 41.22
D.Short 26 wickets at 41.61
M. Short: 15 wickets at 49.53
Kuhnemann: 4 wickets at 56.75
Pope: 18 wickets at 72.5
Andrew: 24 wickets at 54.29
I’m pretty sure we’ve got plenty of better options than Zampa.
Agar should play ahead of Swepson in Australia's nine Tests in Asia next year
Green really needs to be batting top 4, unfortunately that means Marnus should be left out.
