Aussie selectors would argue that having a good gloveman who can turn half chances into wickets, well and truly trumps having a bloke averaging close to 40 with the bat, who struggles to glove anything but the most straightforward chances.
Seems a pretty reasonable viewpoint, given the success Australia’s had at Test level over the past 2 decades.
Quiet achiever Carey starting to enter rare air of Australia’s all-time wicketkeeping greats
Not sure anyone is suggesting Carey’s a living legend as anything, let alone for his keeping.
The author has simply said he’s creeping up the list of most dismissals by an Aussie keeper ant the number of dismissals he completes per innings is also up with some of our better wicketkeepers

Berry was South Australia’s coach at one stage, wasn’t he? Might explain how they’ve struggled if they’ve only learned which side of the bat’s used to hit the ball. 😊

Totally agree, I think Foakes is an outstanding keeper and if he was an Aussie, it would be a serious go between he and Carey for that Test keeping spot.

For the past 2 or 3 months, I’ve been reading regular stories in the English media about their women’s team and how they genuinely felt like they were a very good chance to take the Ashes back to England.
I’d reckon they’d be as surprised as they are disappointed, they haven’t been more competitive this series but it probably shows just how much depth there is at the top levels of Aussie womens cricket

I agree it’s not likely, but we only have to run into a similar situation to the Poms, who have not had a decent keeper in ages. The only one this century who’s been a good gloveman is a bloke who can never get a decent go – Ben Foakes. The rest have been backstops at best.
They’ve now had to turn to youth and Jamie Smith’s in the hot seat. Still too early to tell but he seems more backstop than top notch gloveman – but he can bat, so that trumps his work behind the stumps

It has to be a big concern that starting a 2nd season with much the same spine players, there’s still speculation about who is their best halves combination. All he has to do is look at the Knights to see the flow-on problems from not having a settled combination at 6 &7.
This is something Hasler should have sorted out half way through last year.
Round 1 Predicted Teams: Titans - Des needs to settle on halves duo, where will ex-Wallabies star get a start?
So you’re saying for at least the last 6 or 8 years that Australian women’s cricket has been so strong, the standard of their opponents generally has been poor?
Yes this English squad has underperformed to date, but how much is down to them and how much down to a super talented Aussie outfit that simply never gives up?

I wonder why the women aren’t being compared to the great mens sides of previous eras. Their record against all comers in all formats is truly imposing

“Hasler put his stamp on the club last season”Really? If he did, I reckon Titans fans would be asking him to take his stamp back, given they finished 14th with such a talented squad.
The issue Titans supporters need answered is, does this squad have any heart? There’s talent to burn across the field yet there’s only a hope these guys will make the finals rather than a certainty and that’s because, week to week, nobody knows which Titans team is going to turn up.
A couple of years ago, a Warriors squad with much less ability and a lot more heart had an outstanding season and finished 4th. These guys need to copy that intensity and if they do, Gold Coast could be smokies for a top 4 spot.

But you wouldn’t put any money on him to do that.

This type of speculation can be really healthy as long as it’s grounded in a simple principle; what ever change is suggested, must value add to the sport. Improved decision-making technology would certainly value add, assuming the powers that be are willing to pay tens of millions for it.
I’m not sure I can see how promotion/relegation value adds? I look at the English Premier League and it seems the same 3 or 4 teams are in the race to avoid relegation or be promoted every year.
The aim of cricket should be a level playing field, ie one tier, so perhaps a better option is to come up with solutions so those teams below tier 1 can improve to the point where they’re capable of matching it with the top ranked teams.

I feel sorry for Pommie drivers if the speed guns they use to record bowling speeds in England are also used on the roads.
I watched a lot of the English Tests last year and apparently Wood was up over 95mph and all the rest were north of 85mph. Funnily enough, they didn’t look that quick through the air and didn’t look that fast when they bowled in New Zealand.
Maybe it’s a northern hemisphere thing?

I’m not a fan of judging keepers by numbers, especially when that judgement is based on batting and keeping wicket. As Paul pointed out Ian Healy kept to Shane Warne for quite a while, so some of his stats are down in comparison to others, he’s still one of the best glovemen I’ve seen.
The key to any good keeper is their footwork and Carey’s feet were moving really nicely over the summer. That obviously puts them in great position to glove the ball but also shows they’re confident and in good form, in exactly the same way as a batsmen who is moving well at the crease. The Australian attack will also take a huge lift from knowing the guy behind the stumps is in good form.
Carey will miss chances, all keepers do, but the very few he misses are tough half chances rather than the simple chances a certain bloke named Jonny shelled a few years ago. That absolutely kills bowlers and kills any momentum/pressure they’re trying to build.
PS best 5 Aussie glovemen for me; Don Tallon, Bert Oldfield, Gilchrist, Grout and Brian Taber.

I made two replies, one to you and one to DTM. I have no idea which reply you’re referring to but your point is still not valid.
Anyone can and should bowl if the skipper things they can contribute and that should be a part of the planning process before the Test starts.
Only a very poor captain would assume his frontline bowlers are the only ones capable of taking wickets, therefore all plans to get the opposition out should be based on them
Will Australia have the Galle to play just one fast bowler in Sri Lanka - Starc or Boland for solitary role?
Lets assume Connelly plays and they go with two quicks, Lyon & Murphy. I’d guess the pecking order after that would be Webster, Head, Connelly, Marnus, Smith. In other words, he’s probably a long way down the list of options which means he’s not likely to get many overs, maybe a half dozen at most.
If they think the spinners are more likely to play a role, they’re more likely to leave out a quick, which means the fast guys won’t bowl much, Connelly would move up a spot and would likely bowl perhaps 10-12 overs, but probably not more than that,

I don’t think anyone minds young players touring for the experience. In fact, I reckon most would applaud selectors for taking this approach.
Where I have a problem is if that work experience player is then going to be seriously considered for a Test spot, in front of others who most often have better claims.
Will Australia have the Galle to play just one fast bowler in Sri Lanka - Starc or Boland for solitary role?
Batsmen who get a bowl desperately want to take wickets, just as bowlers getting a bat, desperately want to make runs, both for the team and for themselves.
I reckon guys like Joe Root get just as big a kick out of taking 2 or 3 wickets as they do at scoring a hundred

That’s the other thing the Storm do well. They very quickly recognize when a player is not a success and quietly move them on, then bring in the next budding candidate.
That stems in part from not over commiting to longish contracts for fringe players until the fully prove themselves.
Contract circus boosts Brown’s bank balance but could be costly to reputation of wannabe 'franchise player'
That implies Webster bowls quite a few overs Don and I’m not sure he will get the chances to do that. Not saying you’re wrong, just not sure he’ll get a lot of bowling.

Dropped catches would be a very useful stat when talking about the cost of the catch, rather than deciding whether it was a “real” chance because this could then be applied to all fielders.
It would also be far less subjective than trying to decide whether there was a genuine catch, ie a realistic chance for a player to complete the catch.
