What is the “contentious situation regarding the No.7 jersey at the Storm”?

NRL Pressure Gauge: Origin stars, fading veterans, desperate players on final chance - who needs to bounce back in 2025

Yep, everyone forgets just how good Ben Barba was in those couple of years at the dogs then sharks. Also add in James Maloney, who just had a knack of winning.

Round 1 Predicted Teams: Sharks - Star recruit puts Cronulla in title contention, rising star set to miss starting spot

Maybe add the the dog lover to that list as well

Canberra’s greatest team of NRL era: Tonguey and Loz are there, but who else makes the cut?

I was reading through the list, thinking “these backs are good, but not really elite (except for Daily).” But then you get to the forward pack, wow. Reading the front row thinking they were world class, then Wiki, Whitehead and Croker. Absolutely amazing pack. And players left out like Fenson, Leroy-Lars, Kennedy (did he play 50 for the raiders?).

Thanks for the read, good fun.

Hard no from me. We need less TV running the game, not more. Test cricket should be played under the same rules as suburban club cricket. I would prefer all sports to work that way.

It's time for cricket to fix the DRS - here's how it can be done

I think a couple of years playing outside Gaigai was a massive factor in Young’s improvement.

Code violation: How can Roosters (or other NRL clubs) compete if English rugby poachers target Dom Young?

It’s not boxing/UFC. Surely footy doesn’t need the contrived bad blood angle?

NRL 2025 draw: Grudge matches scheduled to give opening round plenty of bite

Pretty sure the kiwis (and most people) would have picked him over Crossland if he was fit this year. He was also out for the 2023 series. So while it is true he hasn’t played for the kiwis since leaving the storm, I don’t think he’s been overlooked. In fact Kiwis have been unlucky with their two first choice hookers (from last world cup) unavailable since then.

Roosters clean-out continues with cut-throat call on injured Test star

The other side of that is if Tonga/Samoa get consistently good, do the NRL/ARL ever consider them tier1? I cannot ever see that happening, because they’d not want to take those players out of origin contention, or even possible Kangaroos/Kiwi selection.

Out of interest, who develops all the AFL talent? Is it schools? AFL clubs? VFL/SAFL/WAFL clubs? (aren’t most of these linked to AFL clubs like NSW/QLD Cup?)

The NRL has become divided into the haves and the have-nots: Why it is time for a draft that will work for rugby league

He had a great game

Tommy guns: Dearden and Trbojevic fire up as boxing Kangaroos topple Tonga in heavyweight slugfest

In general I thought our forwards were much more “workmanlike” as opposed to having a big impact with the ball. But in defence I think our forwards had the edge. We may have conceded metres, but very few line breaks though the middle.

I agree on the backlines. Coates and Lomax were the two best wingers in the tournament by some distance for mine. Toupo was pretty good, but our two were outstanding. How did To’o go in England, I didn’t get to see those games.

Thanks, very enjoyable read. So many good forwards left out.
I’m not bitter about Sonny Bill, it was so good to watch him play – although I would obviously have preferred it always be for us. A very gifted, hardworking, and motivated player.

No room for modern stars - so who makes Bulldogs' greatest NRL side?

During the year some people we saying Dragons should keep playing Marskey at 7 after the good showing against the panthers during origin. I did not agree, but why is he not mentioned at all now?

Dragons are getting better but are they rebuilding or just treading water after sending Hunt on his way?

Really enjoyed that game. Some great tries. Toumalolo was immense (charge down at the end, wow), and that Kini kid for the Kiwis is still pretty raw, but the past two weeks have done wonders for his reputation. Two great performances in a losing side.

Be interesting if Tonga can back it up, but I am expecting (hoping) next week goes like it did 2 weeks ago.

Fonua-Blake propels Tonga past Kiwis into Pacific final in epic thriller - and Kangaroos should be nervous

It does lean into the Ben Hunt theory, in that he only recently became available so they reacted quickly. But you wouldn’t imagine they’d want two aging halves in their final years on the books. Maybe they’re after Addo-Carr? (although they need centres, not wingers)
That said there’s worse halves parings running around than Hunt + Townsend, maybe not exciting, but they’d be very well organised. And while people liked to bag Hunt last year, he still topped try assists in 2024 by some margin, in a team which was in the bottom half of attack overall. I know stats aren’t everything, but that’s not nothing either.

For me the big point of interest in this article is hidden in the last sentence. Trent Liero had his best season to date, and is young (only 23) and was in the origin extended squad this year. Definitely a player on the up. At the moment Josh King is probably giving slightly more, but I reckon Liero will pass him in the next couple of years, so is a much better bet for 2026. Fit and durable too, 26 games each of the past 2 years.
(I do acknowledge the long history of Storm forwards under performing at other clubs).

Though that was one of Grant’s best games in a rep jersey. Great consistent service, everyone getting the ball on the run. A heap of tackles. A creative threat. And almost always choosing the best option. Thought the whole team played very well, but Grant was outstanding.

Also agree with the person who said Coates must be sore, with Johnson the kiwi’s only kicker it seemed every set started with Coates taking the ball and getting smashed, then add in his hard yardage runs.

I think Coates has been outstanding in both tests so far

Which broadcast did you watch? I watched channel 9 replay, and not good. So obviously the 4 of them in a studio somewhere away from the game. Really felt like listening to a couple of blokes watch the tele. Enjoyed the game, but the broadcast was very amateur.

No proof, just an email going around after the 2nd time. From memory it named a couple of players rumored to be in the thick of it, and also said Steve Price was in the hotel bar the whole time (so not involved). Of course it could have been a complete fabrication, I probably shouldn’t have mentioned it. Sorry

Chivalry, charity and cheerful celibacy: Times have changed - nice guys don't always finish last in rugby league

Don’t think Thurston belongs on this list. Rumor was he was up to his neck in both coffs harbour incidents, and his early years at the cowboys were not entirely squeaky clean.

That hit on Smith was pretty disgusting and weird. So far off the ball from memory, and seemingly unprovoked.

Kangaroo rookie's call-up is an indictment on his ex-NRL club - fans are entitled to ask how they got it so wrong

Yep, HIAs have definitely changed bench makeup.
Also more and more edge forwards are playing the full 80. And there are a few dummy halves and middles (especially at 13) who play the 80 now as well. So some teams only *need* two middles on their bench.
