The 2024 State of Origin kicked off on June 5 in Sydney, continued in Melbourne with Game 2 on June 26 and concluded in Queensland on July 17.

NSW reclaimed the Origin shield with a thrilling 14-4 win at Suncorp Stadium in the series decider, becoming just the third Blues team ever to win a series decider at the famous Queensland venue.

Queensland won the opening game 38-10 at Stadium Australia, before NSW squared the series with a 38-18 win at the MCG after a record 34-0 first half.

Blues Enforcer Angus Crichton won the Wally Lewis Medal for player of the series.

After a dramatic, action-packed start with a series of major hits and some brutal defence, the series decider spilled over when Daly Cherry-Evans and Jarome Luai went toe-to-toe to spark an all-in fracas that led to drama aplenty.

Controversially, Jeremiah Nanai and Cam Murray were both sent to the sin-bin by Ashley Klein for their role in the scuffle – Murray, who was binned from the Blues’ bench, remained off while debutant Mitchell Barnett was sacrificed from their on-field 13 as a result.

Haumole Olakau’atu, a member of the Blues’ extended team not featured in their 18 for the match, was also ejected from the sideline for his role in the scuffle.

With just a Valentine Holmes penalty goal separating the two teams at half time, the Blues and Maroons traded penalties before the flashpoint arrived – Jarome Luai rushing into space and passing to Bradman Best, who briefly fumbled before fending off Dane Gagai and scoring in the corner.

When Mitchell Moses burst through a tired Maroons defence to score a second try barely a minute later, the series was the Blues’ to lose; a late injury to the star No.7 a minor blip as the Blues secured a famous 14-4 win – and Origin glory.

The Blues produced the greatest first half in Origin history to stun the Maroons, piling on five tries to lead 34-0 at the break.

With Mitchell Moses outstanding on return and Brian To’o scoring two tries in the corner, Queensland had little answer to the onslaught, with Zac Lomax continuing his outstanding series with a spectacular try and a second just before half time.

The Maroons salvaged some pride from the wreckage with three tries in the second half, while Liam Martin was contentiously sin-binned for sparking a melee by rubbing Jaydn Su’A’s hair following a mistake, but a Dylan Edwards try sealed an emphatic Blues win – and ensured the series will head to a decider at Suncorp Stadium.

The 2024 series had one of the most dramatic starts in Origin history, with Joseph Suaali’i sent off after just seven minutes – and setting a new record for the shortest debut ever – for a brutal hit that knocked out Reece Walsh.

The 12-man Blues were never truly in the hunt after that, with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow stepping into Walsh’s shoes at fullback and scoring a hat-trick, including two tries to set up the match in the first half.

A Zac Lomax-inspired Blues came out strong after half time to briefly threaten an incredible comeback, but the Maroons steadied, man of the match Daly Cherry-Evans capping another Origin masterclass with an incredible intercept, run and kick to perfectly set up a Xavier Coates try late to ice the game.
