Hey Bunnies fans, here’s a fun side to contemplate before your morning catch-up with your stockbroker, a team of players who each played just one game of first grade for South Sydney during the NRL era.
How many of them can you remember?
1. Peter Taylor (2005) – A mercurial young player from Tamworth who joined the Roosters in 2002 while still at school and then moved to Souths in 2005, playing his sole first-grade game off the bench in round 3 of that year. Injuries largely hampered his career, and he left the NRL at the end of 2005 at just 20 years of age.
2. Jacob Gagan (2019) – A former Australian Schoolboy representative, Gagan played his sole game for Souths in their 2019 round 4 loss to Manly. He then had a season in the Elite One Championship in France in 2020 before joining Norths Devils in the Queensland Cup.
3. John Olive (2015) – Olive’s career never really got off the ground, and after making his first-grade debut for Souths in 2015, he managed just 13 first-grade games across five seasons for Souths, the Titans and the Bulldogs.
4. Tautau Moga (2021) – Moga had all the talent in the world, but a string of untimely injuries prevented his career from ever taking off. He’d been through four clubs and had played three Tests for Samoa by the time he joined Souths in 2021 for just one start, before heading to the Dragons the following year where he enjoyed a little more success.
5. Jared Taylor (2003) – A big, powerful winger or fullback, Taylor debuted for Cronulla in 2002 notching up two first-grade games before joining Souths the following year and making his sole appearance in the Cardinal and Myrtle in the round 12 loss to Parramatta. He took the hint and moved to France in 2005 and even managed three appearances for his adopted country in the 2008 World Cup.
6. Sitiveni Moceidreike (2017) – The big Fijian was a lower grades journeyman and had a few appearances for Fiji under his belt by the time he was called up for his sole NRL performance in 2017. He scored Souths’ only try in that game but immediately returned to the lower grades before heading to the UK to join the London Broncos.

7. Dean Byrne (2004) – Byrne was a young player on the rise and played six first-grade games for the Dragons in 2003 before joining Souths the following year. He had just one game in the top grade with the Rabbitohs before a serious leg injury brought his career to a premature end.
8. Glenn Grief (2002) – The rugged front-rower had a premiership with Newcastle and 144 first-grade games under his belt when he joined Souths in 2002 following their re-admission to the NRL. He played in Souths’ round one clash with his former club and that was all she wrote for big Glenn.
9. Shane Millard (1998) – Millard spent most of his top-grade career in England but did manage just one first-grade game off the bench for Souths in 1998 after joining the club from Western Suburbs.
10. Kurt Dillon (2020) – The big front rower spent most of his career in the lower grades, but after making his first-grade debut for the Sharks in 2018, he headed to Souths where he played one top-grade game in their round 15 demolition of Cronulla to the tune of 56 points to 16.
11. Danny McAllister (2003) – McAllister made his way to South Sydney via Sheffield Eagles, the Gold Coast Chargers, Gateshead Thunder and the QLD Cup and became the 1000th player to run out in first grade for the Rabbitohs when he was called up to first grade for just a single game in 2003.
12. Nathaniel Neale (2014) – The big Kiwi was a lower-grade journeyman who got his one chance in first grade in 2014 when he played off the bench in Souths’ round three loss to the Tigers.
13. Dale Newton (2006) – First-grade appearances were few and far between for Newton who strung four games together for the Sharks towards the end of the 2003 season before waiting another three years for his final match in the top grade with the Rabbitohs.
Now be honest, how many of these one-gamers do you remember running out in the Cardinal and Myrtle?
