Jones goes from one blunder to another.
Human Rights Commission complaint lodged over Tony Jones' 'insulting and offensive' Djokovic dig as drama escalates
If Hynes ever manages to stand up under pressure in big games they’re a chance.
But not with him as a passenger – or even a minus as he has been at times.
Not confident.
Trindall needs to play seven so Hynes can play off the back of that – hopefully with less pressure on him.
It may do the trick – sure hope so.
AFB will give them much more grunt and I suspect he may inspire the other forwards to greater performances – they’ll certainly be facing a less formidable defence running off the back of one of his charges.
I’d be putting my hand up to take the forward runs straight after one by AFB.
Hunt is a loss but his minutes were few – not sure why – the mysteries of Fitzgibbon.
Williams was an error machine.
His knock on against the Warriors allowed Johnson to set up the winning try for instance.
Handling was never his strength – good luck Parra.
Having said that he may be tough player to replace as a 13.
I do hope Brailey can build his attacking game off AFB.
He’s a tackling machine and plays 80 minutes but he’s got so much attacking talent we rarely see, especially with short kicks into the in goal.
Hope that changes.
Ennis was great in that regard.
If possible giving him a rest while McInnes takes over for 15 minutes or so is a good idea in my opinion but a hooker who can play 80 is a huge asset when it come to bench options.
Kennedy and Hynes are the big issues – Hynes in big games and Kennedy generally.
Kennedy’s defence has never been his strong suit and it still isn’t.
His attack is up and down – often down these days.
He was at his best attacking wise when Hynes was at seven and Moylan at 5/8.
The backline hummed with tip-on passes, flicks and immense flair – that backline was the best in the comp to watch when it was on song.
Pity about Moylan’s defence.
Luckily fullback is one area of depth – with Dykes (if he can ever actually take the field) and Ison in the wings.
Hynes is under heaps of pressure to perform but I’d argue Kennedy is under even more.
The loss of Atko is a shame – terrific player who CAN handle pressure but I can understand why he left.
Cronulla have invested a heap in their million dollar a season man Hynes so no cash for the likes of Atko – what a pity.
Overall they have done well – they’re not exactly stuffed with rep players unlike Storm, Penrith, Roosters, Brisbane or the Cows.
But they have to cash in on AFB’s arrival.
Round 1 Predicted Teams: Sharks - Star recruit puts Cronulla in title contention, rising star set to miss starting spot
Spot on.
I was delighted she fired back and she did it well too.
There is no doubt AO behaviour is getting worse and it’s no surprise with organisers encouraging boozing and “party courts”.
At least Kyrgios and his mate are out – that’s one plus at least when it comes to less chance of bad behaviour.
Danielle Collins had the guts to call out the bogan-ism that is ruining the Australian Open
I asked Dennis Lillee once who was the best bowler he’d faced – answer: Malcolm Marshall.
So many greats of that era nominate Marshall.
That’ll do me.
As for batsman – Lillee said – Viv.
OK, Bumrah: Indian star stupendous against Aussies but not the greatest of all time by a visiting bowler
Of course not.
The SA government and those that supported it cared about sport – a lot.
As a TV journalist I covered the Namibia situation in 1989 and worked with two South African camera crew.
I’d been a sports reporter for some years and all they talked about and asked me about was Aussie cricket and rugby – the ban really hurt.
The Taliban by contrast, couldn’t give a crap about sport – or much else.
Sport is not the way to get them to change their behaviour and if you think it can then you are dead wrong.

Of course not.
The SA government and those who supported it cared about sport – a lot.
I worked with two South Africans in Namibia in 89 and they talked sport incessantly and asked me constantly about the Aussie cricket and my sports reporting.
The ban hurt – big time.
The Taliban couldn’t give a shit – about anything.
There is no pressure point – certainly not sport anyway.
‘Sex apartheid’: Government MP urges England to boycott Champions Trophy clash with Afghanistan over Taliban
It’s an awful situation – the Taliban are barbarians in every sense of the word.
But the only people hurt by not playing Afghanistan are the cricketers and their supporters in that cursed country.
A ban affects the Taliban not one iota.
I wish it did.
Play the Afghans and give the cricketers and players something to take their minds off their misery.

“You are holding Hynes solely responsible for the Sharks prelim final loss.”
Nah, never wrote that.
What I wrote is this – “Hynes has failed to stand up in big games.”
It’s a direct quote from an earlier post.
So that is my contention – feel free to argue it is not the case but if you do make sure you provide examples to back up your claims because I have plenty to back up mine.

PPS.
We’re off to dinner but this has been fun.
Please don’t ever change.
Ciao.
Dragons' major coup to blow Sharks out of the water with deal for young gun
Thank you for this – have shared this amusing exchange with a couple of other people – we are in your debt.
Cheers.
PS. We don’t think ‘short memory’ is your problem.

OK. One more time.
“I am not the one arguing that results are solely the responsibility of the halfback.”
Never suggested that.
My point is simply this – Hynes folds under pressure.
Try to argue against that.
As for laughs – so many to choose from – but this later one from you is a ripper: “Just a fact that these other halfbacks’ ability to ‘deliver under pressure’ didn’t result in better outcomes during the regular season.”
Yet you also write this: “I am not the one arguing that results are solely the responsibility of the halfback. My entire point is that they are not.”
So which is it?
You are arguing both points of view.
Hilarious.

Has it occurred to you that the quality of the team around them has an influence on that?
No, of course not.
The fact your ‘arguments’ are so simplistic and risible is why I am no longer continuing this.
Dragons' major coup to blow Sharks out of the water with deal for young gun
Where those teams finished has got nothing to do with it – those players lift and do great things under pressure – fact.
You can throw up as many smoke screens as you like but it still comes down to this – Hynes folds under pressure.
Fact.
I know two people who work at the club – it is the prevailing view within the club itself – they are just hoping it changes – I do too – desperately – but I am not optimistic.
I know what I see – plenty of other fine judges such as the likes of Cooper Cronk say the same thing.
But hey, you can believe whatever you like – I couldn’t give a toss.
I also have no intentions of continuing this – it’s a waste of my time.
Dragons' major coup to blow Sharks out of the water with deal for young gun
They did well enough to keep the side in with a chance – with well under a quarter of the game to go they were just eight points behind.
If only Cronulla at that point had had the wisdom to buy a marquee player, a million dollar a year player who like other players of that ilk regularly do – DCE, Moses etc – could come up with something special, to stand up and make an impact.
Oh that’s right they had done so – what they got was what Hynes delivers in all big games – nothing.
And not just in big games either – club games too in 2024 – that Dogs game for instance.
I am not the only one who sees this – plenty of former players say the same thing.
I know what I see and what I see is someone who can’t handle it when the pressure is on.
Dragons' major coup to blow Sharks out of the water with deal for young gun
Having supported Cronulla since they came into the comp in 67 (I was aged 7) and having spent many, many thousands of dollars over the years in memberships for myself and my family – as well as a decent sized donation when the club was in danger of folding in the late 80s I find it amusing to see a “fair weather” supporter comment.
Apparently to be a “real” supporter one must ignore the fact that Hynes has failed to stand up in big games.
The final against Penrith this year was a case in point – two runs – no impact – not positive anyway – though his hospital pass to Talakai (one of several) was a highlight I suppose – for Penrith.
There is no other player in the comp on the kind of money he is on who consistently fails to deliver in the big, vital games.
His press conference before the game was infuriating – in responding to all the (valid) criticism he said that as long as he was happy off the field he didn’t care what the critics said.
Right.
The fun fact for his defenders is this – as long as he continues to fail to produce in big games (and let’s not forget his Origin debacles) and go missing the clamour around him will continue and they’ll be forced into even more “fair weather” comments and contortions to defend him.
Good luck with that – you’ll need it.
Meanwhile I hope that Cronulla – against expectations – keeps Atko.
He’s just the player Cronulla needs – and guess what – he delivers – that pressure field goal he kicked in Melbourne can be compared favourably with the one Hynes missed against the Dogs from just about in front – game over.
Dragons' major coup to blow Sharks out of the water with deal for young gun
Agree with you in every respect.
Cronulla simply can’t carry a playmaker who doesn’t deliver under pressure – not at $1 million a season – or for any price.

Would love to have seen them play together at their peak.
What a centre combo.
Sharks' greatest team of NRL era: Gal, Val and Peach make cut - but who misses out?
Yep, getting Miller into that backrow has to happen somehow.
Maybe Gal at prop.
ET and Sludge for sure.
The others for me are Maloney or Bird (given no games restriction).
Kurt and Dane on the bench for me too but Prior was superb and underrated – he was key to that finals win in 2016 and Douglas – an ironman.
But the Kiwis on the bench for me.
Sharks' greatest team of NRL era: Gal, Val and Peach make cut - but who misses out?
Just altering your last sentence: “Atkinson (Hynes) is good, but has a long way to go before he catches up with the elite halves in the comp.”
In my post I referred to “pressure” – the kind of pressure that comes in big games – finals.
Perhaps you didn’t see Hynes in the final against Penrith – I sure did.
Latest in a long list of failures when the heat is on.
Dragons' major coup to blow Sharks out of the water with deal for young gun
You are dead right – in my case I “liked” how he played for us.
The rest – no thanks – not my type of player in terms of behaviour.
Be interested if you ever do a Cronulla best since they came into the comp – particularly interested in what you do with the pack.
I can guarantee there’ll be two different centres though.
Sharks' greatest team of NRL era: Gal, Val and Peach make cut - but who misses out?
Some view him as a protected species and they really don’t like anyone pointing out his numerous failures to perform when under pressure.
No one gets a free ride is my view – especially when the salary is a $1m a year.
