Hawks supporters had plenty to smile about in season 2024. After losing their opening five games, Hawthorn sprang into action and gradually climbed up the ladder, finishing seventh behind the Western Bulldogs only on percentage.

They easily accounted for the Bulldogs in the elimination final and were unlucky to lose the semi-final to Port Adelaide by three points after hitting the goal post twice in the last quarter.

Top 100 Game Players Lost: 0

With one exception, all those deleted from the Hawthorn list were delistings, and only one had played sufficient games to make it into the club’s Top 100 game players list. That was Jack Gunston and – as the club had nominated to redraft him on the rookie list – he has remained a Hawthorn player.

The one retiree from the list was Chad Wingard who after a successful career at Port Adelaide had only five years at Hawthorn and failed to make the Top 100 game players list.

Top 100 Game Players recruited from other clubs: 2

In a highly successful draft period, Hawthorn picked up two quality players who had both given great service to their previous clubs: Tom Barrass (equal No.47 – West Coast) and Josh Battle (equal No.97 – St Kilda). Battle had just made it into the Saints’ Top 100 game players with two rounds of the season remaining.

Current Top 100 Game Players: 5

James Worpel (No.99) made it into the Hawks’ Top 100 game players late in the season to join veterans Luke Breust (equal No.7) and Jack Gunston (equal No.22) and current club leaders Blake Hardwick (No.53) and James Sicily (No.68).

Only Jarman Impey is likely to play enough games in 2025 to join the list.

Despite the elevation of James Worpel during the season, no player dropped off the list with Wally Culpitt and Rick Ladson sharing the hot seat in position No.100.

Top 100 Goal Scorers Lost: 1

Although not making the Top 100 game players list, Chad Wingard (No.91) had kicked enough goals for him to be ranked on the Top 100 goal scorers list.

Nobody stands out as a new entrant to the Top 100 Hawthorn goal kickers club, but a number of forwards could surprise.
