Former Brisbane Lions AFL premiership player Aaron Shattock is in a critical condition in hospital after a horror excavator accident at his Gold Coast workplace on Sunday.

The 44-year old, who was a member of the Lions’ 2002 premiership team, suffered life-threatening injuries to his chest after the digger he was driving while working on a Gold Coast property toppled over, crushing him underneath.

Emergency services needed the jaws of life to free Shattock, who was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital to undergo surgery and is fighting for his life.

The father of three played 57 games for the Lions between 2000 and 2004, becoming a premiership player after they defeated Collingwood by nine points in a classic decider in 2002.

He also won the QAFL premiership in 2001 for the Lions, having been an emergency for their AFL grand final win over Essendon that same year.

He then finished his AFL career with two seasons and 11 games for Port Adelaide, before returning to Queensland to play for QAFL team Labrador, where he eventually became coach for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Speaking to Lions Media, Brisbane great and Shattock’s premiership captain Michael Voss described him as a ‘ripping good fella’ and ‘an outstanding teammate’.

“I can’t believe it … it’s terrible at any time but just before Christmas is even worse. Our prayers are with him and his family,” Voss said.
