Melbourne captain Max Gawn will not return to pre-season training until late January after a freak incident.

Contact to Gawn’s throat in a training session earlier this week resulted in the ruckman fracturing his voice box, leading to a six-week no-contact period for the 32-year-old.

“Max sustained a fractured larynx following a hit to the throat during training this week,” Demons high performance boss Selwyn Griffith said.

“As part of his recovery, Max won’t be able to exercise for the next two weeks, followed by a period of non-contact training for an additional four weeks.

“Despite the setback, Max is recovering well and remains in good spirits.”

Defender Jake Lever will also return to full training at the back end of January as he continues to recover from knee and shoulder surgeries.

The Demons endured a terrible 2024 campaign, finishing 14th on the AFL ladder as speculation about star midfielder Chrstian Petracca’s future at the club swirled and Clayton Oliver’s off-field behaviour continued to make headlines.
