Carlton’s famously injury-prone summers have once again bitten the club, with star forward Charlie Curnow set to undergo knee surgery.

The two-time Coleman Medallist missed the end of the Blues’ disappointing 2024 campaign, including their elimination final loss to Brisbane, with an ankle injury, for which he went under the knife in September for reconstructive work.

Curnow’s latest bout of surgery, which the Blues have described as a ‘small clean-up’ according to The Age, will see him miss the club’s upcoming pre-season camp on the Sunshine Coast; however, he is expected to return to full training in January.

“The club has made the proactive decision to complete the minor procedure early next week, to ensure Curnow’s availability for the start of the season will not be impacted,” a Blues statement reads.

The news is worse for tagger Alex Cincotta, who requires surgery of his own on a hip issue that will see him miss a large chunk of the season.

The Blues believe recovery will sideline the 27-year old for four to five months, meaning he would likely be available again around Round 10 of the home-and-away season.

Curnow and Cincotta’s setbacks are the latest in a long line of recent Blues medical crises to dog the club over off-seasons in recent years, with many stars, most notably Sam Walsh, regularly having their pre-season preparation, and often their participation in early rounds, severely affected.
