The 2024 AFL grand final was won in emphatic fashion by the Brisbane Lions, thrashing the Sydney Swans by 60 points for their first premiership in 21 years.
20-year old Will Ashcroft’s 30 disposals and a goal saw him become the youngest Norm Smith Medallist since Wayne Harmes in 1979.
Unlike previous years where a rematch was played the next week, the AFL now uses extra time to decide the premier in the unlikely event of a tie.
The teams will play two five-minute periods of extra time if scores are level at the end of the fourth quarter. If scores are still locked after the two extra-time periods have concluded, the siren will not sound until one team gains the lead again – at which point the match will immediately end and they’ll be crowned premiers.
