13 of 30 juniors in Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft come from Vic Country, and 5 in the top 10. How many would return home if Vic Country had a team? Next best is Vic Metro with 11. SA with 2, Allies -2, WA -1, QLD -1. Is Tasmania the next team to reap the benefits of Vic Country not having a team?

Country Victoria deserves a flipping fair go - Should Melbourne metro lose a team to make it happen?

In all seriousness a Country Vic team could play out of the Kardinia Park stadium. Just need a stadium out the south east side of Melbourne now, perhaps in suburbia so it’s connected to the city – Waverley perhaps?

That would be the Park Hotel

Not bad Snoop. Most clubs could do that although North is completely surrounded geographically by Bulldogs, Bombers, Blues and Demons – may find it difficult claiming territory in between Carlton and Essendon. So let’s move Carlton to Thomastown, Collingwood to Viewbank, Essendon already is at Tullamarine, and Hawthorn at Box Hill; Richmond to Chadstone; the Saints and the Bulldogs can stay where they are. Force the big clubs to make the move?

This is the biggest hurdle. The best model is perhaps an outer suburban team that has an alternate country base for games, in much the same way that the Bulldogs do in Ballarat.

Fair point, Mick. Although there is something to be said for waking up to fresh air and not having to listen to the constant drone of the city every day.

You’re absolutely right Maxy. In many cases Adelaide would be closer for some Vic Country players such as the Sunraysia League. We’re still talking four hours plus to get home though. The lifestyle of the smaller city of Adelaide may suit Country Vic players better. Perhaps the 20th team needs to come from SA with some regional connections. The Norwood Reds, perhaps with some games in the Barossa, followed by a glass of red; and some games in Mildura, followed by a glass of orange juice?

Thanks Macca. I’m sure there are many people in the same position. Just as there are in Tassie. We can only support the teams put in front of us and many of us have formed strong bonds (including myself) to existing clubs. I wonder if a focus on the city fringe would be a suitable compromise i.e. games played in the developing outer north and south-east?

Interesting thought. Is Freo strong enough for a third club to come in. North may rise on the field, but is that enough to lift it off the field? Since the Melbourne clubs lost their suburban bases it’s been a downward spiral for the clubs with smaller fan bases. There’s little point of difference from other Vic clubs so a change of market may help, but too big a change may just be a knockout blow.

Perth is not a backwater country town and could do with a third AFL side: Could North make a hop and a jump west?

Thank you. I thought we needed less too, but then I looked at it from a representation point of view and around half the players in the AFL system hail from Victoria. The only question I then had is do the teams adequately represent the regions beyond the old ‘footy’ suburbs?

Ideally there would be an entirely independent Country team but you are absolutely right, population dispersal creates a location problem. The Bulldogs Ballarat games are a possible model to draw from with Bendigo and the LaTrobe Valley likely venues and North and the Demons the potential candidates. The other possibility is a location at the fringe of urban Melbourne such as the Epping urban growth corridor or the outer south-east. This would provide better access for regional Victoria and maintain proximity to a large and expanding population.

Well said. Will be interesting to see how it unfolds with the acquisition of Houston and the continuing sale of future first round picks.
