AFL Top 100: Does Essendon have the goal-scoring talent in 2025 to prevent another late-season slump?
O’meara ‘classy’ and Durham just one of many similar state league players in your mind. Haha yeah I think our footy opinions couldn’t be more opposite.
I didn’t grab the wrong end of the stick – if anything you have just expressed yourself very poorly.
The Bombers are on the right track - but 2024 isn't their time
If that is the standard you could say the same thing about every team. For instance O’Meara is poor midfield depth IMO.
And no, you said 20 players on Durham’s level. I can find the quotes if you really want me to.
The Bombers are on the right track - but 2024 isn't their time
If you think that then why bother commenting that Zerk-Thatcher would never be missed?
I think I remember you now- you are the guy that said there are 20 Sam Durhams in the state leagues right? Heh
The Bombers are on the right track - but 2024 isn't their time
Without Mckay he would play every game.
The Bombers are on the right track - but 2024 isn't their time
It’s pretty obvious why we went so hard though. Zerk-Thatcher was leaving, and we had an undersized defense. Mckay was a perfect fit and only cost cap space, which we had a tonne of (and still do). I also disagree that he is ‘very overrated’ – most people were criticizing us for getting him like you, but he has been good for us and so far is a success.
The Bombers are on the right track - but 2024 isn't their time
It’s not substantive analysis because you got very simple data wrong. We have not played 6 games against current top 8 teams. 😂
As for Merrett, I don’t know what quote you are referring to, but he has always been a balanced mid and is far from a ‘soft’ outside player. You claim he is soft and not damaging, but he has made the AA team three times, and finished 8th, 7th, 12th in the Coaches votes in three of the past four seasons, and is currently 7th.
Yeah I think ill respect the coaches over your biased and quite frankly laughable opinions.
The Bombers are on the right track - but 2024 isn't their time
No you made the claim there is 20, so name them. Or maybe you simply can’t?
Here is some information to help you: Collier-Dawkins has never shown the type of form that Durham has this year, and was de-listed. To claim he is better than Durham is pure delusion.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
Actually I asked you to name 20 player’s as good as Durham from the state leagues and you named a bunch of players that aren’t even midfielders (and a lot of your list have shown very little at AFL level).
And I know exactly what Durham was. I am talking about what he is now. Clearly a midfielder and has polled coaches votes in 5 out of the 8 games so far. Pretty good for someone who only just started playing midfield this year.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
Don’t need to to win this argument mate. AFL recruiters watch much more than you or me, and they can’t find that many good mids from the state leagues.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
We could argue all day, but objectively we can see over a period of many years what the actual reality is.
And he is much better than that. Just watch Durham more… you’ll see.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
No you are the one making silly claims, such as there are 20 midfielders on Sam Durham’s level running around the state leagues. Yet scores of AFL recruiters are unable to draft anywhere near that amount over many years. That is basically the only info I need. I trust the AFL recruiting industry a lot more than some random person on this website.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
Yeah you have chosen a 12 year time frame and named very few midfielders. It doesn’t help your case I’m afraid.
You can name Culley if he ever gets there – as it stands he isn’t close.
As you have shown, there have been very few A grade midfielders drafted from the state leagues in a decade, so the chances that there are 20 going around right now is basically zero.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
No not limited, just realistic. You have pretty much proven my point with this list. You went back TWELVE years (Rampe) and you have hardly named any midfielder’s on Durham’s level or better. If that is the best you can come up with in a twelve year time period you can definitely forget the idea that there are 20 Durham’s going around right now.
And no you cannot assume that players like Jai Culley will be just as good when their exposed form is nowhere near Durham’s level. Several others on that list too.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
The hit rate of professional AFL clubs is a very good indication that there would be nowhere near 20 young midfielders in the state leagues on the level of Newcombe or Durham.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
Nothing even remotely close to backing up your ludicrous claim
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
Name 20 state league players that you think could play midfield at Durham’s level
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
The AFL recruiters certainly are looking, and they are coming up with far less players of that quality than you suggest. I had a good look over recent drafts including the mid season drafts, and not many are close to Sam Durham.
So the only way you could really believe this is if you think you are a much better judge of talent than AFL scouts.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
I know enough that there certainly isn’t 50 Sam Durham’s going around the state leagues. Not a chance
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
The talent pool is just nowhere near where you think it is. Doubtful there is 5 on Durham’s level, let alone 50
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
For every Durham, Newcombe and Barlow, there are 10x more of these players that don’t make it due to flaws that are amplified at AFL level. To say there are 50 Durham level players in the VFL etc. is ridiculous.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
I saw it, and I also saw Cripps throw three jumper punches to Martin’s neck. Look on Bigfooty – vast majority of WCE supporters are blaming Cripps.
And even if you think it was an umpiring error, you can point to other wrong decisions that went against Essendon, such as Peter Wright’s non paid mark (eagles scored a goal right after that).
We were close to losing them, but only because of poor discipline and poor goal kicking. We also very nearly beat last years Premiers.
The Eagles lost because our midfield dominated theirs, and the stats show that.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
Seriously, that’s how you saw the game? It was because of our stupid errors that the eagles were in it at all. The 50m penalty against Goldstein to gift them a goal, soft downfield free gifted them a goal, kelly’s poor effort on the goal line, simple set shot misses etc.)
We did our best to lose the game, but Bombers were clearly the better side.
Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified
Overall we have been much better at contested footy this year.
Footy Fix: Does the Essendon Edge not apply to Connor Rozee or something?
Its not a problem friend. Merrett is ultra professional and he will still be good for 3-4 seasons near his peak. Kako is more progressed than the average 18 year old due to being in our NGA academy and training with the main team. So it’s not too late for Merrett to be in our 2027 Premiership team. Tsatas completely changed his kicking style and finally put on some good size. He is looking very good this preseason. Wright is not best 22 anymore so it doesn’t matter that Caddy is significantly younger.
You say that is the same for nearly every position on the list, but Merrett is the only player turning 29+ in our best 22. That does not indicate a problem with the age profile of the list.
