Ponting referred to this and I believe he said that was the reason the law was changed to fingers under the ball, otherwise the ground is being used to control the ball. In this case Smith’s fingers were under the ball and he had sufficient control to flick the ball up to a teammate. The ground wasn’t being used to control the catch. Out!

Kohli deserved benefit of the doubt over catch call on golden duck but India's goose appears cooked

I believe the ball did touch the ground and my initial reaction was not out. After hearing Ponting’s explanation I now believe it was out. Smith’s fingers were under the ball, he had sufficient control of the ball to flick it to a teammate, the fact that it touched the ground is not relevant as Smith had control of the ball by that point. Out!

If the technology says you are not out, that you didn’t hit the ball — then you didn’t hit the ball. Even if you did and know that you did.

A sinister pattern? New research reveals Indians are being targeted by disgracefully correct decisions

Has Jaiswal stated anywhere that he didn’t touch the ball? If he did, Aussies have a word that describes that. A not out verdict proves he didn’t touch the ball? Even if he did?

Essendon have looked at players young for their draft year, there is some great value here. Archie Roberts has only recently had his 19th birthday. Originally expected to go about pick 20 in last year’s draft, Essendon traded down to pick him up in the 50s. He was held back until late this season but he will be a very good player. I will concede that Stringer was no great loss, pick 53 very late in the draft just about sums him up.

2024 AFL Draft recap: Who your team picked, biggest steals and more

Draper benefited from the selection of Bryan, Stringer benefitted from not having to play as a big bodied midfielder. Essendon can play two rucks so long as Wright is not in the side. Archie Roberts played well in his first game. I would drop Nik Cox and replace him with Lewis Hayes for his first game.

Six Points: Incredible Essendon, respecting Port's masterclass, and Hawks commit the cardinal sin... AGAIN

Stringer is consistently played out of position. He often is forced to play as a big bodied midfielder because of the absence of an alternative. I don’t believe he is on a huge contract.

I didn’t introduce the topic. I am more than happy to leave politics out of sport and that includes the Olympics.

At least Biden knows what he doesn’t know. Trump is dangerous because he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. Don’t even think to compare them as human beings.

Losing is one thing, not giving a yelp is another. Forget finals, time to give a few from the VFL a chance — Bryan, Roberts? Two metre Peter hasn’t done much for a while — worth a fourth round draft pick in a trade? An interesting comment about Parish and Shiel, meanwhile Essendon are likely to lose former number 5 draft pick in Tsatas because they can’t play him in the midfield. Guelfi’s loss was significant, I don’t believe playing 200cm and 196cm players on the wings is working, certainly from the point of view of defence. Play Jones on the forward line instead of Wright.

Footy Fix: The glaring stats and damning coaching blunders behind Brad Scott's Bombers' ultimate humiliation

The players reacted too much to the umpires mistakes which was very costly apart from the mistakes costing actual goals. Just get on with it! Essendon would have lost anyway but the margin should not have become a blowout.

It is fair enough to penalise attempted time wasting. Cribbing on the mark is common and rarely penalised. This isn’t so much as to waste time which it does, but to slow the game down and give teammates more time to defend.

If Sullivan saw the umpire and gave the ball to Nick Daicos it was an obvious free kick. This didn’t cost Collingwood the game, it would have been a different game without that goal and nobody knows what would have transpired. It would have cost Collingwood the game if it had happened in the last 10 seconds.

Dying late last year was just due to immaturity, Essendon’s young bodies weren’t ready for a full season.

Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified

Essendon aren’t missing much but they are a year or two from the big prize. It is important to get games into Davey, Jones, Cox, Hind and Hobbs. Ridley has been missed, Zach Reid needs time to grow into his 205cm body — backmen are becoming the size of former rucks but need time.

Footy Fix: Essendon have arrived... and it's time we all started getting absolutely terrified

Essendon do lack a big bodied midfielder, Jake Stringer has been forced to play this role part time. Stringer is a better shot for goal when he doesn’t have to think about it. Guelfi has been a shrewd fourth round draft pick. Essendon’s great strength in the midfield is their ability to share it around.

Did Walker diving into Draper’s back change the umpires’ thinking? Walker is good enough that he shouldn’t be playing for free kicks.

Footy Fix: Ferocious, fast and fantastically coached - stuff the controversy, let's give the Dons the respect they deserve

Try and ensure the ball finishes up with goal kickers on the forward line.

Inaccuracy will especially occur when non-goal kickers are having a shot at goal. Kicking goals efficiently is an art restricted to a minority of players, Naughton should be playing back.

Zach Reid needs time to grow into his 205cm body, Darcy will be great when he grows into his 208cm. Helps when you have two grandfathers who have played at the highest level — as a Bombers supporter I always remember meeting David Shaw in The Patch in either 1959 or 1960.

Footy Fix: The Saints were ten times as rubbish as the Dogs were last week - and it's worth working out why

At times it seems that two teams are playing different games in a match — A(3,2,1) beats B(2,1,3) beats C(1,3,2) beats A(3,2,1).

Footy Fix: The Saints were ten times as rubbish as the Dogs were last week - and it's worth working out why

Good on Darcy Parish with his quick response. The Dogs have done the necessary thing to rest him from the next game.

UPDATED: Dogs place Liberatore in concussion protocols after scary collapse, but maintain no symptoms

Fair enough but the commentators on the night were focussed on the recipients rather than the deliverer in the midfield.

Footy Fix: Does the Essendon Edge not apply to Connor Rozee or something?

Are we giving Ivan Soldo enough credit. Before the game I thought Draper and Goldstein would clean him up but that didn’t happen. Rozee, Butters and Horne-Francis would each be million dollar plus players on the open market, Essendon don’t have one. I hope North Melbourne were adequately compensated for losing Horne-Francis.
