I wouldn’t call him over-rated. He played a significant part in eight years at Hawthorn , playing in two Premiership sides , 2008 and 2013. I just think he played for too long, a consequence of Sydney giving him a ten year contract. Six or seven years would’ve been fitting i.m.o.

This is a non-story. There is no history of number 23 at Sydney before Lance Franklin. It’s a Hawthorn number worn by John Peck , Don Scott, Dermott Brereton amongst others. Buddy had it at Hawthorn and decided to take it with him when he went to Sydney. The really significant Swans number is 14 , worn by Bob Skilton and Paul Kelly

The big Melb. clubs don’t have to play in Tassie either. Hawthorn’s four opponents there next year will be GWS, Adelaide , North, Port Adelaide. It’s unfair the non-Vic teams with little support in Tassie have to go there. Might be a few North supporters, that’s all. Why aren’t the big Melb. clubs like C’wood , Carlton , Essendon, Richmond sent to Tassie? As long-established clubs they have supporters there ,unlike the newer expansion teams. Even though a Hawks supporter, I don’t like seeing matches where the only visitors’ supporters are the cheer squads.

Not so. Aussie Rulles played in all States and territories at all age levels and both sexes has huge numbers soccer doesn’t come close to matching let alone exceeding. I’m all for soccer numbers expanding but making stuff up does not make it true.

Yes. Similar here in rural NSW. Costs parents have to pay for their kids to play soccer are steep. Only the seriously dedicated and the well-off pay up. Historically Rugby League ruled but Aussie Rules football been making inroads. I’ve heard complaints that FA takes the money raised in the regions but doesn’t plough much back. In contrast , the AFL puts $$ into grass roots clubs and umpire training and support.

I can part-answer your question , Tiger. I live in NSW and have a former Western Suburbs Magpies supporter friend. He hated the merger when it happened and still hates it. But he’s loyal and supports the Wests Tigers , albeit with some regret.

Aside from all the arguments about the event, suspending a number of players for several weeks will have a significant effect on GWS’s 2025 season. Can’t see that contributing to the integrity of the competition. And to others crying “nanny state!” and “woke!” this affair is neither of those, it’s more “pearl clutching” if you’re looking for insults. However I’d just call it a blatant over-reaction way out of proportion to the alleged offences.

@ Lincoln. You’re right , brattishness is not sustainable. But surprise surprise brats mature. The ideal age range for AFL players is mid to late twenties and with 100 plus games experience.
When the brats get there in coming years they will be seriously good footballers. Some people even have them favourites for the 2025 Flag. Though I’m a Hawthorn supporter I think that’s over-optimistic. But 2026 / 7 are def. possibilities .

Also like the term sickness as euphemism for hangover. Reminder of the English newspaper columnist Jeffrey Bernard notorious for hangovers and not submitting his work.
