Hi again The Bush. Sorry to labour the point and you mount some good arguments but under Smith Head has averaged 77 compared to 44.4 under Cummins and 39.75 under Paine. However one measures means and things Head has received an enormous bump under Smith. I was thinking of removing Smith captaincy from the numbers since he has only captained Head in 4 tests but felt that it was not appropriate to do so.

Hi further in fact Usman averaged 25.13 under Michael Clarke and 36.05 under Tim Paine according to ESPN cricinfo. He has not averaged less than 40 under any captain for strike rate

Hi thanks. What is conflating the numbers for other captains is that players like Head and Labuschagne had huge averages for the 4 tests they have played under Smith’s captaincy. Also the mistake re Pat Cummins is in the table- apologies The text however is correct. “ As captain Pat Cummins has a bowling average of 25.89 compared to 21.59 when not captain”.

Thanks good points. The article was to draw some parallels and as I have mentioned not causality. For whatever reason including ageing, team selection, and possibly captaincy etc there has been a decline in the performance of key players. Also on the inspiration a number of players in the England set up including Crawley and Leach do say that the Stokes captaincy has directly enhanced their outlook and performance, granted these are not Australian examples. Thanks for your comments Jammel appreciate it. Yes I agree none of the three are truly great. I also think that Pat Cummins may be a tad unlucky with a lot of players dropping their averages under his captaincy.

Hi Graeme. Thanks. Selecting the team was harder than I thought it would be especially the opening slots. Green was great in many ways- I just feel at number 6 more reliability is needed with the bat.

Thanks kick to kick, fair point. I think there are two things- identifying overall proportion of coaches inside and outside; and then within that the relative successes- I have gone for the latter for manageability of the exercise but see the connection

Thanks James good point about looking at the last two to three years. I guess I was thinking that the whole period for coaches would smooth out the fluctuations.

Thanks Peter- yes Witts is interesting as you say. Before his injury he was going very well at the Suns including the captaincy
