It is an interesting take on ‘free agency’ that you often get better compensation for a free agent leaving than you do if a non free agent is traded. Smith a good example, pick would at least be a few better than what is currently being offered.
Hysteria over free agent compensation is completely overblown
I don’t think any one can say that Geelong aren’t anything but an excellently run organisation who players want to play at. I think the rest of the competition should be more ruthless in not just allowing players to move there with little work required from cats (for non free agents) loosing a couple of years of first and second rounders does have an impact on a club.
How in God's name do Geelong keep doing this? Burning questions from latest Clayton Oliver trade bombshell
Completely agree – the narrative about Oliver is ‘any trade should come at a big discount’. Why? Any suggestion other trades should be discounted? I mean Barrass is over 30 – discount?

I think the simple answer is because people let them. Other clubs are told to ‘get to work’ to find picks if they are selling themselves to players where the narrative with Geelong seems to be they attract players so they should get the players.
There is also the flow on effect from on going success they are good so good players go there so they are good so good players go there….
There is also a point of difference – you can live at the beach, on the farm but still be within striking distance to be involved in the bubble – eg media etc if you choose to.

Its hard to argue once all teams have F/S that things shouldn’t be even across the board – state based or next gen academies plus your own F/S with the same bidding systems for all. The only inequity which would need to be removed is Syd and Bris having access to other teams F/S via academy. GWS and GC could keep it until their own start coming through.
Once Vic/WA/SA clubs have a reason to invest in their academies I think you would expect to see the products improve.

I haven’t detected much concern about no Victorian based teams in the GF – in my experience those who support melb based teams aren’t huge fans of of the Melbourne teams over teams from other states.
But I do agree with other comments that the clubs themselves own and promote the history and try to include supporters of the pre relocation teams.
Despite media narrative, it’s Sydney vs Brisbane in the AFL Grand Final - not South Melbourne vs Fitzroy
While not really a Geelong specific comment another interesting part of ‘defying gravity’ is trade. Are teams too accommodating to opposing teams in trade? The risk of losing a player for ‘nothing’ is there, but how many players are willing to risk being picked up by the club they don’t want to get to?
For the love of god Brisbane, end this Cats nightmare
Brilliant Article. There is no single answer to this question. Its a case of a is a team who has made the very best of luck, structural advantage and good management.
One interesting point which I think is often underestimated is the ongoing advantage a number of very good FS picks in the pre bidding/matching era have had on the successful modern age. It isn’t just the talent at a discount but has a flow on to allow you to get additional high end talent with your unused picks – eg if you get Ablett in the 40s you can get Bartel in the first round. This helps get a successful team which helped when free agency came in which meant people want to go there which makes the team better which means people want to go there…. and so on the cycle continues.

I would tend to agree this isn’t a ‘loop hole’. Dusty is a free agent who is out of contract and apart from being a little misleading to tigers supporters I’m not sure there is anything out of the ordinary here

The theme which is coming through a lot of the commentary is the ‘hawks got what they deserved’. I’m unclear apart from the insta magic, what are the other offences?

The only thing predictable about Port is the wild swings – win by 10 goals loose by 15 you never know what you’ll get!

I dont’ understand this thought process – does Smith really want to play for North or Richmond? I’m going to guess no. Dogs hold. If he wants to choose exactly where he wants to play he has to be a free agent not just out of contract

Bulldogs and Port are a wild ride – both teams can win by 6 goals or loose by 6 on any given day. Do the Hawks get lucky enough to get the down slide twice?

Really is this any different to all those players around the competition who are saying ‘2 to go’ or ‘6 to go’ or whatever. I mean by saying you have two to go do you assume you’re getting the first one… nonsense

I always find it surprising how willing teams are to allow strong rivals to get better. Free agency is something that can’t be helped but there are few teams who hold strong with any form of contracted player

Time to point out that Hawthorn finished 16th last year. They have double ups against two current top 4 teams as wells as the double up against bottom 2. Its what happens – there is always a team which jumps up and there is always a team which slides more than you think.
Why every team will win the 2024 AFL premiership... and why they won't
An interesting discussion/justification on the radio this morning for picking mids for wingers. Would you rather have Daicos or D’Ambrosio. Not really a fair question, you’d probably rather than Daicos that most people but that doesn’t mean sub out all positions to get him in. If this is approach make it a list of best 23 players not a position by position team.
Snubs, stat-padders, and time for Rising Star rethink? Winners and losers from AFL All-Australian team, Awards Night
Nick Watson was still in year 11 when Dempsey made his debut – not really a like for like. Either you go under 20 regardless of games or maybe just genuine first year players – which may mean not many keys ever end up with it.
Snubs, stat-padders, and time for Rising Star rethink? Winners and losers from AFL All-Australian team, Awards Night
The criteria for this award is always a little odd – you can have a player who debuted in 2022 (so with at least two more preseason experience) being compared to kids who were still in school that year
AFL Rising Star Power Rankings: Every nominee rated from 1-25 - Is 2024's best young gun Warlord, Wizard or a wingman?
Nice to see two wingers in this team! Its interesting that no AA team seems to say – well there are so many mids so lets not pick a ruck and put a mid in but are happy to dispense with the winger so they dont’ have to make a decision about keeping a mid out.
Almost All-Australian: A team of everyone who missed out on the 2024 AA squad is still pretty damn good
Good insight – there is always discussion about players going and ‘doing a Hodge’ at a new team but less said about whether they can contribute to bringing the next generation along at their own club. Its an interesting contrast with North who did a full clean out
Just like old times: The premiership-winning veterans crucial to young Hawks' September surge
North are an interesting one – yes not much to play for but its been a real fade out and has much changed/improved over the last few years. How do you break the back of no expectations?

The ACT relationships should looked at similar to Tasmania with Hawthorn. There is a flow on benefit to the ACT including destination recognition from a general tourism perspective as well as game day tourism. Full flights of interstate supporters on otherwise quiet winter weekends generate revenue for hospitality, accommodation etc. However this is dependent on getting more high supporter based teams scheduled.
However, agree that that the success of the Giants in Canberra shouldnt hold Canberra back as a team destination in its own right.
Time to end relationship of convenience: Canberra doesn't owe GWS anything
