The Swans will feel like they’ve seen this movie before.
Another grand final, another humiliation on the biggest day, with very few contributors again to carry the load.
Who stood out among the bevy in another poor display for the Swans?
Chad Warner: 4
Went Head-to-head with Hugh McCluggage. Tried to create and explode out of the middle but let himself down by foot. He wasn’t alone. Kicked a late goal.
Hayden McLean: 2
One-third of the ineffective Swans tall trio up forward. Started on the bench. Came in to play the second–ruck role but was largely sight unseen. Just the four marks and only the one behind from four kicks.
Brodie Grundy: 5
Had the opportunity to assert his dominance handed to him on a platter when McInerney was ruled out mid-week with injury. He had his way early with Darcy Fort, but Grundy’s influence dwindled as the game wore on once the Lions’ mids got on top. Finished with 22 disposals.
Isaac Heeney: 4
Had Josh Dunkley for company and was soundly beaten. Despite having a lot of the ball early, Heeney ran at only 33% disposal efficiency in the first half. Kicked a goal in the third quarter but couldn’t capitalize on anything. Finished the game on the bench.
Logan McDonald: 1
Came into the game under an injury cloud and was ineffective. Only had one disposal to half-time and was subbed out just five minutes into the third quarter.
Harry Cunningham: 4
He wasn’t alone in having a dirty day as the Lions’ small forwards ran riot. Had Charlie Cameron for company. While he kept him to only one goal, he couldn’t get into the game.
James Rowbottom: 3
Went to Neale early but it was too easy for the Lions champion to shake the tag. Kicked a goal early in the second quarter. Finished the game with 19 disposals, tackles, and injured.
Will Hayward: 2
Kicked the game’s first goal and then failed to impact thereafter. Just the six disposals and two tackles in his second grand final loss.
Tom Papley: 2
Set the Sydney crowd alight with a great first-quarter goal but was hardly seen post that moment. Was well held by Brandon Starcevich. John Longmire tried to inject him into the game after half-time with a few centre bounce attendances but didn’t fire.
Ollie Florent: 5
Leading ball-winner for the Swans. He ran the wings well but didn’t have many friends to go with him in midfield. Kept trying to create off half-back and set up play. Failed to hit the scoreboard and only laid four tackles.
Braeden Campbell: 2
Started as sub and was activated shortly after half-time after Logan McDonald succumbed to injury. Only had the four disposals and minimal impact in limited game time.
James Jordon: 2
Had the task of trying to contain Dayne Zorko and failed to contain him as Zorko got off the chain. Only had the four tackles, had a chance to stem the bleeding in the second quarter but sprayed a shot wide. Finished with just 13 disposals.
Errol Gulden: 4
Held to just the eight disposals at half-time and failed to impact. Managed to work his way into the game to finish the equal leading-ball winner for the Swans but was limited to just defensive half-possessions and didn’t get any of his customary run-and-dash flowing.
Nick Blakey: 3
Was busy early on with his customary dash out of the back half. It was thought the vast expanses of the ‘G would suit him, but he let himself down with poor disposal by foot. Was thrown forward for the last quarter in the hope of getting him involved but to no avail. Finished with 17 disposals.
Dane Rampe: 3
The Swans skipper moves to 0-4 in grand finals. Was honest and tried to inspire his team with courageous acts but the chaotic Lions forward line made it impossible for him to contain on his own.
Luke Parker: 5
Started in the forward line with Ryan Lester as his direct match-up. Was moved into the middle at the start of the second half in the hope his experience and hardness could swing the flow. It didn’t, and he went back forward. He kicked three final-quarter goals. Was this his last game as a Swan?
Justin McInerney: 2
Held to just the 10 disposals and failed to get into the game. Two turnovers and 60% disposal efficiency for the winger on a day he’d rather forget.
Tom McCartin: 2
Had the Eric Hipwood match-up for most of the day. Only took one mark in defence and failed to impact the game with any real meaning. Finished with just seven disposals and one tackle.
Matt Roberts: 4
A bright light on a dark day for the Swans, Roberts finished a breakout season with an assured display on the biggest stage. Was tidy with his 19 disposals at 90% but didn’t have many friends going with him.
Joel Amartey: 1
There was no Amartey Party to be had, as he failed to take a mark in the first half. He finished with just the three for the game. Failed to hit the scoreboard in a sorry display for the Swans forwards.
Robbie Fox: 6
Kept his spot in the side and proved to be one of his sides’ best on a dirty day. Kicked a goal from a 50-metre penalty in the second quarter and was among the Swans’ leading ball-winners at Half time. Was sent back down to defence to mark the dangerous Kai Lohman for the final quarter.
Lewis Melican: 3
Had the first crack at Joe Daniher and while he wasn’t moved off him till late, He couldn’t contain the Lions forward. It could have been a really dirty day for Melican had Joe kicked straight.
Jake Lloyd: 4
Another Swans whose Grand Finals record blows to 0-4. Tried hard to rebound and set up play but fell into the trap of kicking high and long to packs which the Lions were able to mop up with ease. At one stage was caught out on Joe Daniher in a big mismatch which Joe took full advantage of. Finished with 19 disposals.
