I’d like the development of the ALW to be more context-focused, so for example I’d like to have seen the ALW not included in the grand final decision so the ALW grand finals could continue being hosted in smaller local suitable venues. This would be a good start to groundswell local grassroot interest. Having it played in the neutral cavernous CommBank is tone deaf to what the ALW needs at this point in its development IMO.

Hey Roberto, yes I must admit I also thought the title The Roar selected was slightly misrepresentative of the article, my original title was: As the ALW Finals and Women’s World Cup Loom, the Women’s Game has Shouldered the Brunt of Recent APL Decisions.
And yes, the FA has the responsibility for the World Cup legacy, however with eyes likely to be on the ALW leading into the WWC, the APL could have been more mindful of some if its recent decisions I touch on (such as removing the ALW from FTA this season, and hosting the grand final at a neutral venue).

It’s a term used frequently in academic articles (especially in politics and global economy spheres). It means that much of the corporate world (think Wall Street, for example) is largely male-dominated and far-reaching economic/financial decisions they make have gendered impacts globally, particularly in poorer regions (the GFC and Asian Financial Crisis are examples of this).

I have a hunch the hurry to get to 16 teams is to improve upon the current broadcast deal next time around. It was revealed by the Sydney Morning Herald a few months back that Paramount+ subscriptions didn’t hit benchmarks & there was a shortfall in broadcast income. So I think the APL have accelerated expansion plans (but with wealthy & secure investors, it could pay off).

Interesting regarding Roar claiming an exclusive license for Brisbane, I didn’t know this (if true). Although it conflicts with the news a few days back that the Roar would welcome a second Brisbane side.

Yeah your last point is spot on, I’d have thought they’d want to capitalise on the already-existing Gold Coast United branding. Maybe they intentionally want to distance themselves from it?

Hey guys, I’d like to add that I submitted this article just hours before the big Gold Coast bid news dropped yesterday (that the bid has a war chest of funds ready-to-go and are prepared to build their own stadium), so keep it in mind once you’ve read the article (this certainly works heavily in their favour). Hi David, I’ve seen a few people in the comments mention the start date as December 2021. Do you know where this date came from? From my understanding the latest predicted start date (from the WU CEO a few months back) was July-August 2021 (so within the next 25 days).

Someone needs to be accountable for Western United's embarrassing stadium fiasco
The pros of WMG are obviously owning their own stadium, their billionaire backers and having player agent Lou Sticca on their books (responsible for Del Piero and a number of other marquee names).
They have a geographical divide, yes – ‘everything west of the West Gate bridge’ – but they’ve also got a very saturated market, so hopefully Sticca & co. realise they’ve got to actually sell their club to people to have any chance; not just hope being their itself will attract fans (e.g. Melbourne City).
In doing so, I believe they’ll become a big-spending, international marquee club. For them it’ll be sink or swim, & that’s their selling point. They’ll learn from the Heart/City problem (of simply existing and hoping for the best). They won’t be like Wanderers, MSWS or what Team 11 would’ve been in community-oriented.
After a decade of bringing these new fans attracted to the $$, then they’ll have to move heaven and earth maintaining and consolidating them, hopefully the West Melbourne region is big enough then.
