We need a radical change in how we approach football in this country including a higher fraction of the governing bodies’ budget to be spent on grassroots infrastructure.
Since the start of the A-League, we've had trouble developing strikers who can make it in European football. To show how big the issue…
During the A-League era, Australia's young teams went through the qualification process 22 times at various underage groups and were only successful eight times.

Did you read the article or the headline (which I don’t choose)
Our football fan culture and defensive playing style are worlds apart: Will we ever truly appreciate the Socceroos?
As mentioned in the article, as much as we have improved giving youngsters a go, the attacking positions are being filled by youngsters less often than defensive positions. If we can’t get a journeyman foreigner we will try a journeyman local

Apologies for the formatting of the table! Hopefully it is clear
I’m reading it on a mobile so maybe it is better on a PC?

No one is disputing that seniors are expensive. But that does not qualify as evidence that juniors are funding seniors
What would qualify as evidence would be junior expenses being lower than junior fees. Of course there are 100 npl clubs so impossible to rule out this happening, but i dont find any evidence. Closest I could find was one club putting season tickets in the junior rego pack, but this is a small part of the fees and other clubs run juniors at a loss. Also if there are 100 npl clubs it is surprising there isnt at least one whistle blower saying “i used to be with this club, i saw the books, they are ripping kids off”. Of course it is not impossible, but I would need to see evidence
Lifting the lid on why junior football is so expensive in Australia: We need to make the game more affordable to play
So it would take a long time but it would be a combination of approaches
1) aim for 15 percent of state bodies to share cost for the purchase of grounds. Have a vision that within 100 years every club owns its own training grounds
2) introduce a domestic transfer syste.
3) reorganize some of the staff budget in governing bodies to be spent working with clubs to promote social football. Aim for our social participation rate to go from 130k to 2mil in 20 years
4) work towards a united pyramid so the long term benefits of p and r can kick in
5) lobby government for a subsidy for youth fees or youth coaches

The do list that they have 2-3 sessions a week which probably means at least a part time paid coach per team and they mention they have a physio. Unlike Victoria they have no fee to football queensland, but have a higher rego to football australia

AFC Stoneham in England charge 250 pounds (500 AUD) for comparison

A league clubs could learn a lot from npl clubs
With (most years but this one) tv money and crowds of 8k but only have a salary floor of 2.4mil
Are u contactable btw. Would love to chat more about the finances of your npl club!

“is partly state bodies fault”
I forgot to share the reference in the comments! (Roar don’t allow it in the article)

Indeed if they charge for a tidc session more I’d love a transparent budget! We need to know where this money is spent! As I cover in the article, even if the money is well spent there are solutions if we fix our neglect of social football

quite a few npl clubs, I needed someone who left to go on the record. Junior coaches are often 1 part time coach per squad of 18-20 for academies which have to get a wage because it is a 20 hour a week job which requires qualifications.
“numbers are complete fiction” Based on what? It is the FA’s numbers. They also add up when you look at how many clubs there are and how many social teams they have including adults, deaf teams, blind teams, overweight teams etc.
“waiting lists” that must have been an earlier article, my kids only had to wait a few months.

Its complicated and an unintended consequence of a lot of things listed in the article

Thanks for the kind words!
14 million is total footballers with the majority being social footballers. Incredibly that is a proper season of at least a few months at a club, often 5 a side on smaller courts though
They have deaf teams, blind teams, overweight teams, elderly teams. It is how you get fit if you don’t want to be bored running on a treadmill. The numbers are enormous everywhere in europe actually

Indeed i give a breakdown at the end of the article
Where is the money left over to pay seniors?
Lifting the lid on why junior football is so expensive in Australia: We need to make the game more affordable to play
The costs for youth seem to add up, including publically available rego fees (state fas charge npl juniors more according to publically available data), market forces and regulations for 3 training sessions a week force youth coaches and tds to be paid rather volunteer. I havent looked at every budget in the npl, but it does look like clubs arent making money here

Thanks for your kid words. What junior club to you work with?

That is interesting insight as to the differences in approach.
Victory sound a bit old school, though they did bring through valadon who looks like quite a technician?

And yes our pipeline is insane, if you are not in an a league academy it is probably impossible to make it pro. Im sorry u were lost to the game

Agreed! But i do hope we fix our elite pathways
