Interested in the popularity and growth of football in Australia, especially the A-League and Australia Cup. Also passionate about the history of the former National Soccer League.

Yeah, I think that’s why it’s unlikely a team from Perth will feature in the NSD. The costs would be overwhelming.
If football enlisted Jetstar as a major sponsor, that might change.
Geographically, Australia is huge. I couldn’t imagine any lower tier English Football League clubs surviving here, especially with the distance of travel.
If all attention is focused on the A-League and national second division, what happens to the NPL?
100% agree on domestic transfer fees, FIL.
National Second Division clubs might make some decent coin from this. It would be a “selling” league, after all. The new tier would be very inclined to keep pushing their *talents to the highest bidder.
* I’m sure a few moneyball lemons would be hyped-up & sold too.
Anyway, say a club sells half of its roster after a season. That would be a huge rebuild. I know, it’s a good “problem” to have.
If all attention is focused on the A-League and national second division, what happens to the NPL?
We need a Larry Kestelman type. The millionare grew the NBL very well. I know it’s unlikely though.
If all attention is focused on the A-League and national second division, what happens to the NPL?
It’s the NSW & Victorian clubs in particular.
With the focus now on the National Second Division, interest in the lower tiers could wane. At the end of the day, clubs are businesses, and sponsors want to be seen by the big boppers.
Cutrently a lot of NPL games are streamed on YouTube. Traditionally there’s two cameras, a commentator & vision mixer (at the very least). These luxuries cost money. Will these services be funded forever?
I can see a professionally run NSD, but a volunteer based NPL.
Football tends to reinvent itself in Australia roughly every 30 years, which is a rocky road of impermanence.
That gives the A-League & Football Australia a decade to get it right.

You make a valid point, Grem. It’s all about word choice, I think. Certain phrases can elude to negative connotations, & maybe the Matilda’s expectations were sky-high.
I’ll admit that I’m a greedy football fan. All I want is gold for our Olympic girls.

The allegation is certain players were “dissatisfied” with the coach.
I’m happy for the players to be reviewed.
Calm, cheap and Aussie – key criteria for the Matildas' new coach after our 'Ted Lasso' era
I’d like to see the actual players take more ownership of their results, as opposed to throwing Gustavsson under the bus.
I feel their is an internal siege mentality brewing from within the Matilda’s camp, where there is a clash of egos.
They are potentially more popular than the Socceroos. We deserve the best gaffer. I’m sure we all want to win the next World Cup.

Ha! I didn’t mean literally.
But, it does read like that within the context.
Yes, until next season. 😛

The final round of Football Queensland Premier League.

Ross County? It’s nice to know he played for them. Certainly the smallest team in the Scottish Premiership, but one with heart.
Amazing, as Dingwall has a population of less than 6,000.

A Sydney FC & WSW Grand Final would top that figure.
If all attention is focused on the A-League and national second division, what happens to the NPL?
A good win by Sydney Olympic. I do enjoy the old matches. A few players I recognised too (Paul Okon, Jean-Paul de Marigny). Even the 1989 billboards are wistful.

I’m still laughing at “poppet”. 😁

Agreed. It is – the old brick pit (quarry). A spectacular oval once used for the Empire (Commonwealth) Games.

A decent meal too (I’ve had a pleasant birthday lunch there). The little stadium is peculiar, surrounded by train tracks. Hopefully they’ll install seats soon, as opposed to unfinished concrete steps.
If all attention is focused on the A-League and national second division, what happens to the NPL?
Pretty much. There’s still a few gems, such as Fraser Park (Portuguese) & Stanmore Hawks (Greek).

I think it was during the mid 90’s, I was at Rebel Sport (Chatswood Westfield), & I saw NSL jerseys for sale, including the blue Marconi one. I was wrapped.
Coincidently, I was Rebel Sport (George St) today, & saw zero A-League shirts for sale. Not impressed.
They can keep their $150 Manchester United kit.

Which Brisbane team is it? I had a quick Google. Is it the Bardon Latrobe Football Club?

Only if Football Australia win the Lotto.

I could be wrong, but most NPL clubs might not be able to afford surviving in the National Second Division, which includes interstate travel expenses. Meaning, there’s limited aspiration to be promoted, apart from prestige.
Saying that, you’re correct Grem, & the money made from NPL transfers to the NSD would assist greatly.
Worst-case scenario: The NPL goes from a semi-professional to amateur league.
Best-case scenario: New NPL talent is unearthed, & sold upwards to the NSD.
More football for everyone!
