I was a Rugby Union breakaway who could play badly both sides of the scrum. But I was good at it. You've got to be good at something.

Interesting that a former RA chief executive and unnamed sources are quoted the basis of this article. But the choice of venues is critical. Isn’t the 2027 World Cup part of RA’s plan to service the eyewateringly huge loan to save top tier rugby? Given the link of saving the economics of rugby, where will the Lions games be played? Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium may be judged to be too small. But it’s a great place to watch rugby.
Sydney to host 2027 World Cup final with Melbourne shut out of tournament after Rebels debacle - report
Good comment terminal2k. I live close to Redcliffe, and I couldn’t work out whether he was coaching the Dolphins or setting up Souths for next season. I seem to recall the Dolphins having to defend what appeared to be going on.
Rebuilding specialist Bennett returns to Rabbitohs with an aura that’ll inspire players and a plan they’ll follow
Gee, you’re being a bit hard eagleJack. When they went to the pub, they made more metres than they did all season.
NRL News: Mam enters rehab after CEO blasts Broncos players over off-field dramas, Johnson back with a bang
Tony, The Courier-Mail is reporting that he failed the first drug test (no alcohol involved) and that police are awaiting the results of a second test sample. Like your later comment, I’m also very surprised that comment is invited here.
Broncos star facing Integrity Unit again over positive drug test AND being unlicensed after head-on car crash
Richard, I’ve just read a similar report on The Courier-Mail web site. All CD is doing is reporting released information. And this report will be of interest to many Roarers.
Exclusive: Rebels take Rugby Australia to Federal Court, seek $30m in damages - 'their conduct needs to be exposed'
Great post BF. That’s my experience too.
The Wrap: Rugby Australia gaslights Rebels staff and why ‘I Can’t Go For That’
What a great assessment JD Kiwi. With respect to your comment about community rugby, the idiocy in Australia’s top tier has sent this old retired bloke back to club rugby because I can afford it. Going to Suncorp is now too expensive for me. The old days of going to Ballymore and watching three games including a Test match for $9 is a distant memory. And the last two Hospital Cup grand finals in Brisbane have been great. Until RA finally put some SR matches on FTA TV, I couldn’t afford pay per view games. I feel disconnected from SR and Tests and Australian rugby. Let’s hope the statements from the board indicate a better future.
From World Cup glory to a financial precipice. Where did the $48 million go?
I’ve used a magnifying glass over the last two days. And it seems that I must be of British decent. Mind you, I’ll never see 74 years old again. Maybe I should use a microscope?
The Wrap: 'Take them to a dark place' - A quiet round grabs eyeballs for all the wrong reasons
I live just north of Brisbane GWSingapore. The press here has had articles every day for months about whatever the Labor government is proposing that week. What Jacko says below might have some basis. Coates is supposed to have hounded Palaszczuk into going toTokyo to lead the bidding team.
She then decided that an independent organising body would not be formed to deliver the Games, and took control through her own government department. Her department was supposed to coordinate the roles of five other public service departments. The organising committee which was formed doesn’t seem to have done much in almost three years. Many people accused Palaszczuk of using the Games as a legacy project to define her Premiership.
The new Premier, Stephen Miles commissioned a past Lord Mayor of Brisbane to report on locations for stadia. The recommendation was to build a new stadium on the old Victoria Park golf course which is centrally located in Brisbane. Miles promptly debunked the report and plugged for the old Commonwealth Games site at Nathan. Miles has extraordinarily told the press that the he chose QSAC at Nathan because Coates told him too. Unfortunately, as the media likes to say, there’s more to come.

Very good description of events TB. I agree.
Fittler wants players who've criticised Leniu to face sanctions for influencing judiciary, Gallen slams 'hysteria'
Hearing held in Vegas? About an alleged racist comment? In a country with one or two African-American sports fans? With the NRL hoping to get a toe hold into broadcasting rights in Uncle Sam land? Behave Freddy.

“Unapproved” $2.6 million? Isn’t there a financial team to oversee expenditure for the on field team? But it’s all retrospective. Oh, that’s alright then. Phew. I thought it was just poor management by an organisation in such financial trouble that it’s had to borrow lots of 10s of millions to keep the doors open until future tournaments bring less troubled times. Hallelujah.

Rugby league needs a new name but what can you call it to stand out in football’s confusingly crowded landscape of codes?
So Knocka, the code could be called ENUF?

Thanks Tony. I didn’t know that. Well, that’s that then. On to the next crisis.
NRL News: Leniu pleads guilty to monkey racial slur, apologises to Mam - 'I said the word but I didn't mean it in a racist way'
I agree Tony. If the referee or lines people heard nothing, and if the technology picked up nothing, then the only “witnesses” for the prosecution seem to be Mam’s team mates.

I agree K.F.T.D. Loane is my wife’s opthalmologist, and we saw him last December. He still looks very fit and I don’t think many of us would slow him down today.
'Let's see what the worst thing about rugby league is and do that': Loathsome blight union never needed
Drummond’s piece can perhaps be looked at more broadly. Just how viable is professional sport in Australia? I’m a retiree, but I wouldn’t want any of my superannuation to be invested in “professional” sport in this country. So called professional sport seems to have a voracious greed for money. And these sports seem to be generally very poorly managed.
Also, if all public sector money in cash and in kind was withdrawn tomorrow, most of these sports, including the Olympics, would be broke in a couple of years, or less. In the meantime, grass roots sport struggles while their professional top tier rips every dollar out of the till that they can. The Rebels might just be an indication of an unpleasant future during what is possibly a recession.
ANALYSIS: The Rebels aren't going down without a fight - and they might drag Rugby Australia down with them
Great description BF, and equally great memories. The thing for me is that this extraordinary set of games occurred in the relatively amateur days. I’m not so sure that new laws and “professionalism” have improved things. But then, I’m well north of 70 years old.
'Let's see what the worst thing about rugby league is and do that': Loathsome blight union never needed
Actually Busted, I am feeling a bit better about the Reds with the new bloke in charge. I hope for a better season on the field. It might distract me from the off field legal action.
'Let's see what the worst thing about rugby league is and do that': Loathsome blight union never needed
G’day Busted. I agree. Professional sport is definitely all about money. In fact, there’s not enough money on the planet to satisfy its voracious appetite for more and more money. And the more public sector money the better. Not sure about the NRL targeting a share of betting returns though. I thought V’landys’ plan was to try to get just a smidgen of the broadcasting money because even a small amount could return a couple of 100 million a year. Sure could use that in rugby.

In 1979, I left a young wife and my first child and headed off to Ballymore for the grand final between Queensland University and Brothers. I sat on the grassy mound on the eastern side of the ground. After 80 minutes, the score was 24 – 24. Extra time saw the score still the same. The struggle was titanic. Neither side gave an inch. I didn’t hear anybody complain about the draw. The rules said that the game had to be played again the following weekend.
After explaining to my wife about mid-day the following weekend that I had business at Ballymore again, I dashed for the car at 12.01pm before questions started. Back at the grassy mound, after 80 minutes, the score was 13 – 13. The crowd couldn’t believe it. After extra time, Queensland University triumphed 16 – 13 after another two very hard fought stanzas. Again, nobody seemed to have been worried about the draw. Sheek wrote about these games far better than I in his Roar article on 20/8/2007.
Both sets of drawn games were amongst the best I have ever seen. I rarely agree with Wayne Bennett, but he’s famously vehemently against golden point. And so am I. We might as well resort to penalty shoot outs like that other code has, or install a basket ball ring. Ironically, University won the 1979 grand final with a penalty, not a try. And it was sheer gold.
'Let's see what the worst thing about rugby league is and do that': Loathsome blight union never needed
Great article. It’s been my view on these boards many times that success in the dressing room starts in the board room. I reckon Wests’ history over the last 23 years proves it.
Benji, beware the poisoned chalice: The good, the bad and downright ugly of Wests Tigers’ ongoing coaching debacle
It might have been a different story if either of these blokes had suffered an injury putting them on the sidelines for quite a while. Especially injury prone Reynolds who is apparently the captain. These blokes aren’t paid eyewateringly high salaries to put themselves at risk the way they did. Oh, and I’m a Broncos member.
Broncos brawlers get their first slice of Vegas luck after breach notices served but bans unlikely
Happy New Year BF. My nephew in the States says something similar to you. And there was certainly a recent period in Oz when professional sport was asking governments to build “boutique” smaller stadia. But I think that was mainly because they couldn’t get governments to build big anymore. Now building monoliths is back on the agenda in Queensland because of the 2032 Olympics.
