Nah, that’s the ‘cricketers of the year’ award which goes to 5 players. They made it global for a few years in the early 2000’s then went back to the old way.
The Test team of the year is meant to be global so this list is just silly.

Another great moral victory for the English. They sure are great at winning everywhere other than actually on the cricket pitch.

Oh man. I’ve said this before but every time I start thinking I could maybe, potentially, sort of like Novak he reminds me that he is an anti-science nut job who has an extreme victim complex. This is honestly such a nothing situation that has been blown up massively by Novak which has egged on his crazy supporters.
Tony Jones is an extremely average commentator who made a dumb / out of touch joke and apologised. It was an average apology but that should absolutely be the end of it. I know the complaint to the Human Rights Commission wasn’t submitted by Novak, but it’s entirely due to his response to the whole situation. Such a dumb situation.
Human Rights Commission complaint lodged over Tony Jones' 'insulting and offensive' Djokovic dig as drama escalates
So a high average isn’t proof of anything but two lean years is? Can’t have it both ways. That’s basically the definition of cherry picking stats.
How do you solve a problem like Marnus? The four options facing selectors as dry spell turns into drought
He’s an anti-vax idiot which is ridiculous in the first place. But then pretending that he didn’t know why he wasn’t let into Australia is even worse. He didn’t even have the balls to admit he knew why he wasn’t let into Australia.
It’s such a classic victim complex. ‘I’m vocally anti-science but I’ll pretend I don’t know why this has any impact on very clear travel laws in a sovereign country where I would be a guest’.
I want to like him because he seems like a good guy for the most part, but no amount of ‘good guy’ behaviour with fans etc. will ever make up for this kind of stuff.
'Fed some food that poisoned me': Djokovic makes shock claim about infamous detention stay in Australia
Djokovic is genuinely great with fans and often comes across as a genuinely decent person and every once in a while I start to think I could actually like him.
But somehow he always manages to remind me that he is an absolute crackhead who has probably indirectly (probably even directly) led to multiple deaths due to his wild anti vax and other ridiculous views on medicine and health.

How in any way is Boland a sure thing ahead of Hazelwood? Josh averaged 13.6 in 2024 over twice as many tests with more wickets, an almost identical strike rate and economy rate while a big chunk of it was overseas. Boland averaged 48 in England and didn’t take a single wicket in India when he had the chance. I absolutely love Bolo but Hazlewood is both a better bowler and has done it for far, far longer in much tougher places and is in literal career best form. If he’s 100% fit then it’s Hazlewood over Bolo and it’s honestly not really a tough decision.
Bolo over Starc? Yea maybe depending on what sort of team we go for.
But this is absurd levels of recency bias. Would expect better, Tim.
Every player rated from the fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test: Boland, Beau brilliance shows the Shield still matters
People really need to chill on this sort of stuff. Hazlewood had 35 wickets at an average of 13.5, a SR of 32 and an economy of 2.4 in 2024. He is an objectively better bowler than Boland and it sucks that he was stuck behind 3 generational quicks but that’s how it works sometimes.
We have a once in a generation bowler in Tests, it’s Cummins. We have a once in a generation bowler in ODI, it’s Starc. And we have another bowler who is probably the best all-format bowler of the 3, Hazlewood.
Boland is very, very good and very, very unlucky to be stuck behind these 3. Stupid to think otherwise.

Ahahah absolutely love the first line, big fan of just flat out dismissing absurd comments sometimes. Why argue with an objectively silly premise.
I ‘borrowed’ it word for word in my comment below. Why write my own comment when I can use yours. Work smart not hard etc. ahaha

I’m just going to quote Choppy here because he said it perfectly –

One of my favourite players all time.
I feel like he is one of those players who’s reputation will improve significantly (in Test cricket) in the years after he retires.
GOAT level ODI bowler, very good T20 bowler, and genuinely pushing into that all-time great level in Tests. He hasn’t always been perfect and he’s had some poor periods, but he has generally played his role perfectly in our attack and probably walks into every team in the world for his entire career. 300+ wickets at that average and strike rate is so underrated.

Just to be clear, climate change doesn’t require ‘belief’, it’s a very, very well established fact. The specifics are adapting overtime as we study it more but the fundamental concept is about as strong as a scientific consensus can be at this point.
How 'woke Pat' overcame 'Aussie exceptionalism' to keep calm and carry on winning as one of our greatest leaders
We’re literally less than one day in and there are some proper contenders for worst takes of 2025 that will be hard to top in the next 364 days. Honestly it’s quite impressive.
How 'woke Pat' overcame 'Aussie exceptionalism' to keep calm and carry on winning as one of our greatest leaders
Reasonably successful?
The team of the last ~10 years has probably been a top 5 most successful team of all time from any nation when you look at overall success and accomplishments.
Other than the Windies, I think this is a better 10 year period than any other country has ever had. India has been the better team man for man but we’ve been more successful when it matters. The BGT is our only stain and we are in a good position to win that back in the next test.
If we do win or draw, we will hold every bilateral series against EVERY TEST NATION IN THE WORLD, the ODI trophy, the WTC, recent holders of the T20 trophy and we will have officially qualified for the next WTC final (or if we draw we just another draw in SL).
What more do you want from a team?

This whole thread makes me sad. To be fair, I’m proud of the Roarers and most people are very reasonable but some of the comments are just so painfully out of touch. As always, I am both hugely optimistic and consistently pessimistic about the state of humanity and this is such a perfect example of it. Hope for the best, expect the worst I guess.
The comment about activism being a way to feel morally superior might have given me an aneurism though.

I would literally bet everything I own that you couldn’t give a coherent description of ‘Marxism’.
What’s even funnier is that you’ll now look it up and copy paste something and it’ll be even dumber because it absolutely, objectively does not apply to this situation in any way shape or form.
So go on, what does ‘Marxism’ mean and how does it apply to anything here.
How 'woke Pat' overcame 'Aussie exceptionalism' to keep calm and carry on winning as one of our greatest leaders
Bro. I’m a proud American born Australian and this is absolute f’ing nonsense. We’ve had a few decent interactions and I’m actually really disappointed to hear you’re a Trump man. Instant fail in my book.
How 'woke Pat' overcame 'Aussie exceptionalism' to keep calm and carry on winning as one of our greatest leaders
Activism – generally meaning activities intended to better humanity is just a way of making people feeling morally superior? I know it’s only the 1st day of 2025 but an early and strong contender for dumbest comment of 2025. Will have to see how the next 364 days go but very solid effort, mate.
.
I mean come on mate. The whole concept is right in the name. Sure, some activism comes down to essentially pretty useless platitudes and I don’t always agree with the goals of the activism. But if you’re actively working for what you feel is a better goal then how is that just about moral superiority? You literally can’t do anything more than being active given the only alternative is being inactive, i.e, not doing anything.

Great article.
And this is just nitpicking, but India actually has a population closer to 1.5b than the 1.3b stated in the article.
I’m not actually mentioning it for cricket reasons, more because people are really poor at visualising or understanding large numbers (not directed at you, Shannon, just a general observation.) The difference between 1.3 and 1.4 billions is almost 4x the entire population of Australia. It’s pretty wild when you really think about it in context.
For every Australian there are ~ 50 people living in India, 50 people living in China and 15 people living in the US (just as examples). The world is such a wildly big place and it’s easy to forget sometimes.

It wasn’t even slightly controversial. It was so clearly out, that, even as a jaded sports fan who is used to really poor sports media, it’s actually still a bit shocking that this it even an issue two days after the test. I know there are 1.5 billion Indians so statistics just say that there will be a nominally large number of ‘outliers’ even if it is a very small small proportion of the fans. But this thing is just so, so dumb and the senior members of the BCCI and and other Indian pundits who are lying about what they saw with their own eyes and misrepresenting the situation to pander to a fan base should be embarrassed. It is good to see many reasonable voices among the Indian fan base but this is just so dumb overall.
'These people are liars': Former Indian player slams side's mindset, complaints over Jaiswal dismissal
When you start complaining about one of the most genuine and universally well-liked players of the last decade then you probably need to reconsider some things. I mean hey, maybe everyone else isn’t wrong and it’s you that is wrong? Just a thought.

What is possibly wrong with a bit of chirping with the game on the line as long as it’s within the rules and doesn’t cross any lines? We only heard anything because the broadcasters wanted us to – it happens all game every game and you’re silly to think otherwise.

The multiple high definition and slow-mo views of the clear hit & subsequent significant deviation of the ball’s trajectory were very, very conclusive. That was technology in action.

Not sure this bothers people as much as it bemuses us. Commenting about another silly thing an English cricket organisation did is entertaining. I’m not bothered by it, it’s just fun to talk about. Isn’t that the point of websites like The Roar? Bit of a ‘holier than thou’ response to be honest.
