He tried too hard to be like Gilchrist.

He was better when he wasn’t trying to flog the ball.

Quiet achiever Carey starting to enter rare air of Australia’s all-time wicketkeeping greats

Would you resign from your role in your 30’s to give someone else your job?

By all accounts both Phil Emery and Darren Berry were rated better pure glovemen than Healy.

But Emery couldn’t hold a bat at all, and Berry kinda knew the difference between the front and back of the bat.

And as usual everyone just walks by Andy Flower.

Flower had the pressure of being the only test quality bat in the team coming in early at 4 and having to single handedly cobble together a competitive total.

Gilchrist had the privilege of coming in at 7 after a top 6 featuring the likes of Langer, Hayden, Waughs M&S, Martyn, Hussey, Clarke, etc and being able to come in with the licence to flay.

Yeah! Murdoch papers are where the real truths are.

Human Rights Commission complaint lodged over Tony Jones' 'insulting and offensive' Djokovic dig as drama escalates

Looking at your posts – I’m not entirely sure you should be critiquing the intellect of others…

And if I were his boss I’d suspend him without pay for a couple of weeks.

Thank heavens you aren’t my boss then if you think that type of punishment is necessary

“‘Novak is overrated … Novak’s a has-been … Novak kick him out,”
This is the bloke who has won it 10 times

So what? What in that was a) defamatory b) illegal c) a contravention of his human rights?

It was a poor joke, that someone took offence too. It really is nothing more than that.

You must be an absolute kill joy when you go to see stand up comedy.

Human Rights Commission complaint lodged over Tony Jones' 'insulting and offensive' Djokovic dig as drama escalates

Agree with all that.

But the need then to issue a public apology is just ridiculous.

It could have been dealt with internally at 9. It’s a workplace issue, not a personal issue between two people

“beyond the pale”

A tad hyperbolic, no?

Human Rights Commission complaint lodged over Tony Jones' 'insulting and offensive' Djokovic dig as drama escalates

Jones should merely have said it wasn’t an insult.

There was absolutely no reason to apologise. Nine should have held their ground. They’ve tossed an employee under the bus to placate someone who commands the attention of a segment the Australian audience – at most – 7 nights in a year. Come next Monday people forget about the tennis.

For those saying ‘whatever happened to free speech’, is Novak not using his free speech in response?

Don’t think it’s about that at all. It’s more an absurd reflection of modern society where people expect apologies for whenever they are offended. It’s mental.

Jones said an unfunny joke. Djokovic is offended. Jones broke no law, and there is nothing in that that would be defamatory (even by Australian litigious standards).

There is no legal or public compulsion to apologise.

It’s absurd that he was basically forced to. Djokovic took a gun to a knife fight.

What if it was a joke that was received well by Djokovic? Does Jones then have some inherent right to ask Djokovic to publicly applaud the joke at his next press conference?

Human Rights Commission complaint lodged over Tony Jones' 'insulting and offensive' Djokovic dig as drama escalates

This is a good day for Jones to be honest.

It cannot be underestimated how anonymous he is even in Melbourne.

I have seen this person at Tullamarine walk into the Qantas lounges as if he was invisible. Contrast that to seeing Bruce McAvaney or Gerard Whateley in the lounge and people quietly offering a quick hello and a kind word.

At least he now has some global recognition. All publicity is good publicity.

Human Rights Commission complaint lodged over Tony Jones' 'insulting and offensive' Djokovic dig as drama escalates

The “if” is quite important actually. It actually implies a sincerity and an honest reflection that the joke may not have offended everyone – and most importantly, it was not directly said to the person. It was an indirect joke.

Unless there is a genuine consequence to the taking of offence – like Djokovic waking up with leprosy that was entirely avoidable if not for the offensive joke, then why should Jones apologise?

Djokovic is offended by a bad joke, so be it.

I don’t understand why people should apologise for the sensitivities of others. Now, if the joke was plainly defamatory or broke a law, then the need for an unqualified apology is important.

No, it’s more of a reflection of your penchant to want to shift the needle to suit your argument.

Numbers don’t lie when it comes to the majority of Aussie Test team being in fading final phase of their career

100%, Ben.

Why do some of these players keep playing? Because they keep getting picked.
When will these players stop playing? When they stop getting picked.

I think the last player who walked away while still being an absolute first XI pick was Adam Gilchrist.

Every other player – even Warner – retired because they knew the selectors were going to tap them on the shoulder, not because they really, really wanted to walk away.

Numbers don’t lie when it comes to the majority of Aussie Test team being in fading final phase of their career

But that doesn’t answer my question or remotely come close to proving your point.
If you are objectively looking at careers in thirds by tests played you break them evenly, which is what the author has done. If you are wanting to look at them through length of career in time, which I suspect is what you are wanting to do so as to emphasise that the last 3rd of Smiths career with respect to time, not total tests has been poor, then you need to go and do the stats analysis yourself.
But what I also suspect is that you are wanting to do neither and say that Steve Smith’s final third is approximately 57 tests or 9 of his 15 years in test cricket…

Numbers don’t lie when it comes to the majority of Aussie Test team being in fading final phase of their career

100%.
You can also simply just argue he’s the other side of 30 and he’s a fast bowler.
And bowlers operate as a team while batting is very much the individual pursuit. Other batsman don’t deny you runs in test matches, but other bowlers can deny you wickets. An innings where you got 1-90 but someone else comes in to sweep the tail and get some cheap wickets means you statistically had a bad innings, but you may have actually bowled quite well.

Numbers don’t lie when it comes to the majority of Aussie Test team being in fading final phase of their career

Wouldn’t by definition the length of any 3rd be the same?

Numbers don’t lie when it comes to the majority of Aussie Test team being in fading final phase of their career

But why are we doing it to Cummins, whose career has years to run? It doesn’t really make any sense. What it does show is that Cummins returns with the ball in the last three or so years haven’t been the same as they were when he wasn’t captain. At least that’s one potential theory. He took a real beating in the 2023 Ashes, as many of them did, so that won’t have helped his average in that period of time.

He averages 21.5 when not captain, 23.5 as captain and 22.43 all together.

At home he averages 19.6 all together and an insane 18.43 when captain.

All figures are elite by any measure. And as you noted, he was among all that took a beating in the Ashes, but even then it was just one innings in Manchester where he – for the only time as captain – conceded more than 100 runs in an innings. He conceded 100 three times when not as captain. Take that series out and his average is 21.2 as captain.

All players are allowed the occasional bad series.

His strike rate is better as captain, and his economy rate is only marginally more – almost certainly because of that Ashes series.

If anyone is saying Cummins’ bowling is being impacted by captaincy, then they are having to stretch the stats hard to make that claim.

Numbers don’t lie when it comes to the majority of Aussie Test team being in fading final phase of their career

All coaches have a representative manager at the minimum. “ , There you go, I didn’t know that, probably because I couldn’t work out why a man, whose job is to prepare a side to play cricket, needs a manager?

Because it’s a lot more than just
Coaching. He’s getting paid handsomely. Gambhir would also be enrolled to sponsorships etc. He needs a representative to get the best deal.

Djokovic is a complete tool on the tennis court… Yet off it he’s fine.

White Line fever. It exists.

Kyrgios off the court rarely, if ever, starts anything.

He responds to the calling out of him in public. Why shouldn’t he?

Yes what he does is juvenile, but he’s not actually a bright boy either. He’s clearly unintelligent, so why do people expect something he clearly can’t do?
