Will we see Dungunu in the centres? We have so many outside backs I wouldn’t be surprised if he is playing centre.

They have some very good young talent coming through the Reds and I won’t be surprised if they push their way into the side. It would be nice to see Isaac Henry’s terrible luck change.

'Absolutely pumped': 17 Wallabies included in Reds' 34-man squad for pre-season European tour

No chance of matching the AFL in terms of local games. AFL is a massive game in Australia. It is hard to understand being so far away just how big and powerful AFL is. The game is ridiculously wealthy as the game has a very strong investment portfolio outside of AFL itself (Rugby in Australia is currently copying this strategy). To put it into scale, RA has a draw-down facility of $80m….right now the AFL is injecting an additional $1B (revenue not a loan) into development and community football attracting more young players to the game.

You would think the Reds pack is too strong for the Brumbies this year. In saying that, the Brumbies have added some size to the pack. But I think the Reds should be able to outmuscle the Brumbies across the park this year. Just got to watch out for the Larkham factor.

Reds pressure gauge: Next gen snapping at Nonggorr's heels, can centre put injury woes behind him?

A fair bit of pressure on for spots in that backline. JC, HP and Flook will have to fight for it with some of the firepower coming in. A lot more speed and power in this Reds team compared to last year.

No idea how they are going to fit all these backs in.

Really happy with what is going on at the Reds.

I am hopeful that we will see some standout performances from the Reds but unfortunately I think we are still at that development stage where we will drop an unexpected game leading to no home SF. Last year showed that you have to win basically everything to get a home SF given the Brumbies only lost two games and still had an away SF. It is a tough tournament SR.

I think the quality of the NZ sides is a factor as well. Need a home SF to make a GF.

The Tahs are terrible. This is the issue for them. If they start winning they will get big crowds again. Just the nature of sport in Australia as people have too many sporting options and with the costs of it all it isn’t easy to go to games for multiple teams…so they pick the team that is playing well. You just need to look at the AU crowds in 2014 for Sydney compared to the years around it. Canberra is just a difficult place to get to and for Sydney they have their rugby competitions running on the same day.

Not sure about NZ. I understand people are doing it hard with inflation issues and the current recession.

SR is always going to have this intense tournament as it is great preparation for RWCs. We will see if RA can get this third-tier competition up and running this year to fill that gap while the Wallabies are playing etc. It is frustrating having such a long period with nothing under the Wallabies.

Travel costs are too high in Australia at the moment and have been for some time.

I would have dropped Moana after the first season.

Player unions is why they get rest periods. It is frustrating given the tight nature of SR. But SR is unfortunately a sprint that seems to take a major toll on the players. Not sure this can be changed with the Test windows etc.

OZ rugby had lost its way, not focusing on the heart land of rugby. Seems like they have realised this and we should see improvements. Talent is now better focused with far better coaches across the teams this year. It won’t happen instantly but we should see better performances with the odd slip up this year but overall the AU teams should bring a bit more to the contest this year.

Wow, some soul searching after that game.

Unfortunately rugby in Australia is held back by internal politics. Game is terrible for it and frankly is one of the main things killing the game. It was also the years we got a new Kiwi coach and overseas coaches don’t know the players as well so they do a bit of experimenting as well. They like to get a look at players over hearing what other coaches think to work out if they work within the new attack and defensive systems. We tend to see a lot of short term Wallabies in these periods shaping the team for the next RWC. Plus they need a large shadow squad due to the injuries at RWCs.
Marshall looked good in that game playing at fullback where he has more room and nobody had any data to analyse him. We tend to see players have a breakout year until the analytical data catches up with them. Lots of hype in Union on players early on until the data catches up. Fullback seems to be a sweat spot for League converts as well. Give them a bit of space and they light it up. Just unfortunately he would never be a fullback in Rugby as you need jet boots being a small guy and quickly would have had an aerial bombardment coming his way. I don’t doubt if he was in Union at a younger age at the Blues he would have had a great career in Rugby, just difficult for playmakers in League to jump across to the same role in Rugby with the different defensive lines. I played both games and my experience was in League you are playing over the gain line due to the 10m and in Unison you are constantly playing behind the gain line trying to make it over the gain line. Makes the playmaker position very different.

Wallabies on Brown's radar as Eels star casts wide net in search for new mega deal

Tahu only played 4 games as part of the national coach having a look at him (this stuff was in the contracts unfortunately back then) and only scored 3 tries in two years at the Tahs (none for the Wallabies) so fairly much a giant flop in rugby. Interestingly view on Marshall…he was very ordinary in Rugby and clearly struggled with the lack of space and big bodies, being dropped back to amature level was a factor on him. I don’t think this is a reflection on him as a footballer but more the difference in the game…plus the NZ programs being very difficult. For me the reality is certain positions between the games interchange better. Playmakers from League do not convert to Union but outside backs do. Tight 5 on union don’t convert to league but backrowers do. Union centres are more like a League forward and league fullbacks are good at coming across to union. Yes exceptions but this seems to be the basic positional crossovers in the game.

I wouldn’t think too hard on this. Nothing more then a manager trying to create some hype.

Isles is an older player and was a hype train for the US team so I would say his numbers are track related. Modern rugby it is all from that device on the back and they are only interested in max speed and how quickly they get there and is why they use m/sec not 100m times anymore. Modern rugby have the power to hit speed but can’t maintain it and slow down quickly. They wouldn’t do very well in an athletics 100m race to slow down the slowest. You just need to look at the speed in the NRL players with ball in hands on tired legs still hitting 38km/hr. They have the power despite having a ball in hand and fatigue but they peak quickly and slow down quickly. Given Union has shown to have faster players in AU then in the NRL I think it is safe to say they are hitting these speeds on the field, but only for short moments. Koroibete is a great example of an accelerating player to speed who suddenly slows down like he dropped anchor.

Australia's fastest player set for long-awaited debut in Perth Sevens, ex-captain returns for women

Safe to assume this data is coming from the device in the jersey.

Because they don’t have a local professional rugby competition or a rugby union that can provide a professional national side that gets regular Test matches. Every team you mentioned plays in a premium Test tournament. Only a fool can’t see the logic in providing professional opportunities for players in countries that are providing so much to the game internationally. If Rugby dies in these countries, Europe rugby product falls off a cliff. Be nice if he 6N for once allow something to work as intended and not be the ones exploiting it for their own advantage.

Rugby's rotten flaw: Why it's time for World Rugby to protect southern nations from northern raiders

I went to a school that brought in PNG kids, just happened to be a rugby coach going over to select the kids….there is a reason we had the PNG national 7s player on our wing….

Rugby's rotten flaw: Why it's time for World Rugby to protect southern nations from northern raiders

I think the obvious answer was because they at T2 nations. I don’t mind a T2 nations player going back to their home nation where they was born and played. This is good for the game. I don’t like this T1 Test player going to another T1 Test team and it appears to be the 6N teams who have been exploiting it so a bit rich to claim the high horse position for the 6N. Unfortunately we are now going to seeing it down here which is disappointing.

Rugby's rotten flaw: Why it's time for World Rugby to protect southern nations from northern raiders

We could do with the money from the pokies. League is played in a small space that fits a camera lens. Union it is all happening in back play.

'Opportunities everywhere': McReight's warning for RA to get serious as Wallabies gun targets big Super season

I am not overly a fan but I get it is designed to allow players from poor rugby nations to relocate to be on the big stage. I don’t mind players with a parent or grandparent moving across but I question professional players from a T1 rugby zone playing for a national team then being eligible for another. Mach for example at Ireland, no problems with this, just Dempsey playing for Scotland to me is making a mockery of the game and the meaning of T1 Test Rugby. However, players going back to say Tonga etc can help grow the game. End of the day, it is a complex question.
