Long term 'glass half full' rugby fan - Wallabies, Wallaroos, Tahs, Marlins + Aussie 7s

Published

Comments

Did note Josh Turner did not appear to be in the 7s squad for this season when it was first announced but saw him in the Aussie7s socials so guessed with Nathan Lawson going to the NRL he has been re-contracted. He brings a lot of experience especially with Henry Oaterson out this tournament.

All I want is to win more games than last year & see a few exciting tries.

'Head down, bum up': McKellar distances himself from Wallabies, lays down the law at Tahs

Shalom Sauaso

CONFIRMED: Test trio switch to Reds as teenage sensation locked in despite NRLW deal

At a guess I think Shalom Sauaso will head to the NRLW, she is already part of the Broncos and the reality is she couldnt play NRLW til she is 18, later this year. She may give rugby a go this season and try and make the World Cup, then move to NRLW. Which is understandable. Interesting to hear Yapp was encouraging Wright to possibly move to another State to get more minutes. Hope Dascombe has an injury free season it’s one area we are a bit light on is in the centre. Plus good to see prop Browne back from a Wallaroos perspective as we are down a prop with Tahs Hoy out.

Good for the Reds. Will be interesting allocating minutes with Wright, also noting the Reds other half Dougherty spent time in the Wallaroos training camp.

It is going to be interesting as Foxtel will no longer be part o Newscorp. Will DT be as anti-rugby as it has in the past? Probably not.

Rugby Australia on track to confirm broadcast extension with Nine, NZRU set to cop multimillion-dollar downgrade

Tend to agree SMH coverage is a bit light on but the reality for DT & SMH their primary football code is NRL so that’s their main focus. It is going to be fascinating to see what happens with DT & The Australian now foxtel is no longer part of the Newscorp organisation.

Rugby Australia on track to confirm broadcast extension with Nine, NZRU set to cop multimillion-dollar downgrade

To be fair there arent many news organisations these days, basically newscorp and 9Entertainment. It’s unlikely the SMH is going to report much on the broadcast deal as they are part of 9Entertainment. So that leaves newscorp. Also have to say in the last 6+ months newscorp has reported a lot of rugby stories. Sure some in a negative light but that’s the media business to get clicks too. Bottom line as irritating as it might be rugby just needs coverage from anyone.
BTW Newscorp do an excellent job of reporting grassroots rugby better than anyone else.

I think the requirements is that national teams playing in Australia has to be shown on FTA.

Rugby Australia on track to confirm broadcast extension with Nine, NZRU set to cop multimillion-dollar downgrade

No doubt it will. RA don’t have the cash & only 4 teams, minimal opportunities. Read this morning Ikitau has and big offer from Japan while Mcreight has offers from Japan and Europe. There are a lot of players off contract this year. It’s professional sport, have to look after yourself. I’m sure RA would like to sign them but can’t, not enough $$. The same occurring with the women but heading to NRLW. Only a small number can make the 7s squad and there are only 4 Super teams playing 5-6 games, NRLW much better opportunity.

'Grateful' Beale signs fresh deal with Force as Wallabies veteran makes late bid to take on Lions

Very true. He will get a lot of game time, so great experience.

Just saw Tom Hooper probably heading to Ospreys

Was thinking more 2019. Foley was leaving at season’s end but was still playing huge minutes with Mason on the bench. Think Beale played centre/fullback. If I recall when they did give him a game they rested their experienced players part of the Wallabies resting policy. Set him up to fail. Then when Foley, Beale etc left the successful Jr Wallabies guns came in.

Forgotten Aussie young gun who would be 'easily the best 10 in the world'

Irritating but can’t do much about it. Also a bit annoying he went on the Spring tour etc when another player could have got that experience. But that’s life.

'Wish him well': RA confident in depth despite losing World Cup Wallaby to France

Still irritates me how Mason was treated by Tahs and Gibson. But it’s professional sport, as he says he was probably too loyal, he sure didn’t get that from Tahs.

Hope you are right. Although a bit tighter its a top 6, not top 8. But fingers crossed

Ten fearless predictions for 2025: Schmidt departs, Aussies go deep in Super Rugby, Wallaroos' landmark year

Predictions aside, it sure is going to be a busy year of rugby. Have reset expectations, hope for a win or 2 for the Wallabies and the Oz SRP teams are competitive. As a Tahs supporter 2025 can’t be worse than 2024 so that’s a positive.

Well done fellas, you have all done a sensational job in 2024.

Greatest moments, best games, top stars and biggest villains of 2024 - plus five fearless predictions for 2025

Apart form Jonah I wouldn’t classify the others as big stars on a global scale.
Rugby has generally had a team first strategy when it comes to marketing/PR as opposed to focusing on the individual players. This is a strategy similar to the MLB while the NBA & NFL supported the players becoming the focus & recognised. It has been argued this is one of the reasons MLB has fallen so far behind NFL/NBA. Traditionally RA has had the same strategy, team first. But it seems to have changed this year with Joseph Sua’ali’i & recently with the promotion of Maddi Levi. From a marketing perspective youngsters align with players.

Ilona Maher is changing rugby forever - here’s why you should pay attention to her

The issue with Maher compared to Anna K, is she has brought new eyeballs to rugby. Those new eyeballs may not become fully fledged fans but I reckon more people have now heard about rugby because of her. Also rugby hasn’t yet moved to focusing on the individual player like soccer, NFL, NBA etc

One of the challenges is that the 2 biggest footy sports in Australia AFL & NRL are heavily shown on FTA. I think rugby needs some form of FTA exposure just so people know it exists. If it is only behind a streamer that you have to pay for you will never grow the sport. People will just still to AFL & NRL.

Billionaire-backed sports streamer buys Foxtel for $3.4 billion as RA enters broadcast deal end game

The ‘all shapes and sizes’ really should be one of the game’s major selling pointing. In AFL & NRL players can generally swap between pretty much every position.

Good article Nick. She has really raised rugby’s profile, has generated more new eyeballs on rugby than any other rugby player that I can recall except maybe Jonah. A lot of rugby fans are still in the, its only women’s rugby & it’s 7s rugby so it does not really count. But as you say those fans’ kids probably know who she is.

It sure has been a big year.

The 20 biggest stories in Australian rugby this year - but is a bigger one still about to drop?

Would love to be a fly on the wall with RA’s broadcast negotiations especially if DAZN joins in with a significant $$ offer. RA is broke & needs every single cent it can get its hands on but if the rights go to DAZN then there goes any FTA viewing. Way back when ARU went for the Foxtel $$, lost a lot of viewership. Do you sacrifice long term potential growth opportunities for the immediate financial needs RA has.
