I think McLennan is a breath of fresh air. As a rugby fan, I’m sick of the constant bagging that league personalities dish out to our game. It’s a cultural thing for the leaguies. Been going on for decades. Rugby, by-and-large, has not defended itself and as a result everyone is forever talking the game down. McLennan is swimming against the tide and I’m glad he is doing so. I say go get ’em Hamish. And if you drag a few more leaguies over to play, do that as well.

The bagging is from commentators/broadcasters in league constantly and league journalists, listen to ABC Radio and the league boys bag it, listen to Channel 9 and the league boys bag it (literally last weekend Freddie, Joey and Billy), read News Ltd and the league boys bag it (especially since rugby went to 9). It’s not necessarily a diatribe or any critical analysis, but a throwaway line here and there ‘why would you play union don’t get the ball’ ‘rugby yawnion’, ‘only played by leather elbow brigade’ etc. Rugby commentators, quite the opposite, rarely bag league.
Geeze, even going back to when I was in high school decades ago, rugby league kids would bag rugby. It’s a cultural thing in Oz I reckon. Rugby followers usually also follow league. League followers rarely also follow rugby and seem to take pride in the fact they don’t.
