I believe that London could be a success but the Broncos would need to put serious money and expertise in it. Londoners have too much choice to accept second rate anything but get them in Superleague and winning stuff and it becomes a whole new ball game. Excuse the pun.
NRL News: London calling as Brisbane buy in, Hunt reflects on hometown return
“What else should he say though? We’ve got everything sorted, don’t worry (?)”
He could try telling us the truth.
Telling us why certain decisions have been made
Telling us what they are hoping to achieve in the future AND what they are doing to try and achieve that.
They could try telling us how bad RA finances really are, what it is really costing us and what they hope to get out of the Lions Tour and RWC.
'Not really': RA boss shuts down pursuing NRL star, delivers update on Schmidt's Wallabies future
RA cannot do that, all they can do and should do is manage their own patch. If they do that, we may lose some stars but we will at least be starting to put Rugby in AU on a firm footing.
If we couldn’t rescue the Rebels because of a lack of funds then we certainly should not be throwing even more money at greedy players.
'Not really': RA boss shuts down pursuing NRL star, delivers update on Schmidt's Wallabies future
Last year, there would have been many elite NRL players that would have played the full NRL season plus 3 games of Origin plus finals admittedly with 2 byes that they may not have had the full benefit of due to Bye in the first week of the season, bye during Origin. In addition, they may have been required to play the finals season without a break.
Oh and one could argue that since there are fewer players in League and fewer stoppages, that a game of League is more tiring than a game of union.
Which ever way you look at it, resting players in a 14 game season with 2 byes cannot be argued to be necessary for peak performance on the field.
'We switch off': All Blacks great says Super Rugby's future depends on Australia pulling its finger out
Its local derbies that will always create the best crowds even within SR. That is why I am advocating for a senior domestic comp in Aus which then leads into Super. Try selling 26 games a season to the broadcasters instead of 14 and with most local derby games – I think that would be far more attractive to nine et al.

Fully agree Scrum

The NRL season is 24 games but they do have 2 byes. That is extended by 3 trials and a possible 5 finals games. A strategy is emerging in the NRL where the better teams will try and get as high up the ladder as they can and then rest players for the last game of the season particularly if no positional advantage on the ladder can be gained. Last year, Melbourne rested almost their entire team over the last 2 games.
However there is considerable debate as to how beneficial that “resting players” actually is and there is some evidence that some players come back to the field a little flat. Overall, after a 26 week season, most coaches consider it to be beneficial at least for some players. I very much doubt that NRL coaches would take the same approach if their season were 14 weeks and not 26.

JD, this is not a medical journal, this is a fan opinion site.
Also a sports scientist or medical professional of any kind will always tell you that a player will be physically better after a rest. The only problem is that such people cannot translate that physical well being into performance on the field. It is a well know fact that players returning to top level competition after the closed season are as rusty as and that it can take several weeks of intense competition to reach peak footballing performance. That performance can then continue at a level until all the niggling injuries and fatigue starts to set in at which point a rest is hugely beneficial.
That is observational evidence watching sports that last more than a few weeks and I do not need any certification to tell me what my eyes see.

It is a fine line, Resting players is detrimental to a point at which it becomes beneficial and then becomes detrimental again. I would suggest that resting players after 4/5 weeks never gets to the beneficial part.
'We switch off': All Blacks great says Super Rugby's future depends on Australia pulling its finger out
I have become convinced that what Australia needs is a national comp. However we carry that off, the big missing piece is too few games and not enough exposure. We need mate against mate competition at the highest level before we get any were near Super Rugby. If we had a strong domestic competition out of which the top clubs went on to play Super Rugby then Super Rugby would make far more sense.
Its local comp within Australia that could drive a better tv contract and use Super Rugby as a kind of Champions competition. However that local comp has to be an elite comp otherwise we have no chance of engaging the Australian fans.
In some respects, I would like the NRL to take over Rugby (and in some ways I would hate it) only because they would pull no punches and would not suffer fools lightly. We need some hard nosed leadership that is prepared to do for Rugby in this country what Rugby in this country really needs. I followed the Rebels avidly, I even watched the Wallabies when I could but my interest is waning rapidly.

True to some extent but one could interpret your statement as meaning Aussie sides haven’t been trying.

““Now that Australia have dropped the Rebels – hopefully reinforcing some of those other sides with squad depth and competition for places – they’re going to grow and be much more resilient”
Temporary improvement at best and then will be back to square one. Longer term, the quality will decline.

Uncle, some of us do care so why not just go read something else ?
Contract circus boosts Brown’s bank balance but could be costly to reputation of wannabe 'franchise player'
No particularly at Melbourne. You have to prove that you really want to play for the Storm before they will hire you. Many a player has gone there on less money.

Yeah, Remis Smith was hired at the same time as Meany and probably had the bigger wrap at the time but he hardly delivered anything. He left quietly this season.

Nah, He has got a job working for Trump.
Wallabies on Brown's radar as Eels star casts wide net in search for new mega deal
I nearly wrote the exact same thing about Xavier but as you say, hardly the finished article, Meany was the same. Both would be sort after now. Not everyone is a success of course but a lot of them are.

Problem is that it is all about money these days. Nine would probably have to pay royalties in order to get the games. They don’t want to pay much for Super so they are likely to baulk at anything else.

Thanks for the update,
A refreshing and informative read.

I could not agree with you more Gordon,
Bellamy has a knack of spotting latent talent and then understanding how to bring that talent to the fore. Hughes is a classic example. Most people would have been questioning whether this guy was even NRL level when he started out let alone playing in the no 7 jersey, a role he had never played before, a bit of persuading to give it a go, a bit of Bellamy magic and next minute you have a Dally M in your trophy cabinet. No wonder players don’t want to leave the Storm.
That said, one thing that Bellamy never does is go after the “Elite” players from other clubs. He would never ever take a Dillon Brown or a Lattrell Mitchell especially if their only interest is more money. He focuses on putting together a full team of 2nd tier players together and then working with them to get the very best out of them.
And you are right, Blore is another example.
I personally like the Warbrick story. Really out on the fringes in Rugby, no classic superstar credentials, goes to the Storm and a few years later Bingo. I think that is why players like Sua are prepared to be bench players for so long at the Storm.

Not so sure Robbo. It might be as you say but I suspect that most clubs would be sceptical.
I would be wanting proof of his elite status and abilities before offering more not just accepting the “a change of club could inspire him”.

They have changed the title now to include Rugby.

Exactly what I was saying aerial,
1st I would never have put Brown in the “Elite” category. Good even V. Good but not Elite
2nd His achievements largely come off the back of those around him providing him with good ball at exactly the right moments.
Brown would under-perform in Rugby in my view.

One problem is that your elite player is often only elite because they have the right combination of players around them. They often form key partnerships that provided them with those “exceptional play” opportunities.
Over paying for an elite player is always a risky strategy.

I think Vlandys was looking at it so he could put a more complete proposal for year round Rugby League to Paramount. The thinking being that he would shift them back to being a winter sport and it slotting into our off season. Paramount is potentially where the money is and if buying Superleague is what it takes, he would do it in a heartbeat.
