Love these ideas! I think it would be great to have some form of series between AUS and NZ (hopefully competitive) in the middle of a Super Rugby season. I honestly don’t think Rennie is the issue, it isn’t always the coach. While I would through into question his selections, his ability as a coach is unquestionable as he has got more out of the Wallabies at times than most coaches have ever. I think we just need to persevere.

Have a countdown visible on the big screen and players have to be bound to their teammates by the time the 20 secs is up. The ball doesn’t need to be in, the scrum just needs to be set up. Safety has to be considered too of course.

Getting an overwhelming amount of comments about throwing the ball away being an offence. If it is, get the refs to enforce because you certainly can’t tell it’s one by the way it’s being enforced.

1. The shot clock would be 20sec, enough for a scrum to set up safely. That ball doesn’t need to be in after that 20sec, it just needs to be set up. So yes we can do it safely.
2. You must be one of very few people who don’t see the number of penalty goals as an issue in the game. Rugby needs to become more attacking minded rather than taking shots at goal. It’s against the traditional rules but it might just work to stop teams going for three points.
3. This would only be used during foul play situations (sorry if I didn’t explain this well in the article). For example, if a player high tackles their opponent, it can be play on/advantage (assuming they’re both are okay) and the TMO can check it in the background. Then when advantage is over or the TMO has decided it is more than a penalty, the referee calls it back, issues the sanction and calls the penalty. Yes I do acknowledge that consistency would be an issue but it’s one we can work to become better at.
4. Throwing the ball away after a penalty may be an offence, but it’s not being refereed at all! We need to tell the officials and players: any delaying of an opponents penalty will result in marching 10m.
5. Marks again decrease ball-in-play time. Simple as that. In this modern age we must have a fast pace game, not one where stoppages rule. The removal of this rule will open up attacking opportunities for the offence, as they can apply pressure better in the 22. So no kicking won’t be rampant if we remove this rule because teams won’t necessarily want to kick possession away on attack. They’d do it with a purpose. As for your argument that “it’s always been a rule”, that’s not a reason to keep it.

Exactly! So tell the referees to be strict on it. This will speed the game up.

I wouldn’t stop the clock because that still slows the game down and it ends up like NFL. It also would mean the urgency by players and officials to get the game restarted wouldn’t be as high.

Because they are having the same issues in Europe, with people complaining about the pace and number of penalty goals. A faster game is good for everyone.
And besides, if World Rugby doesn’t want to do it, we can implement these into Super Rugby.

Just think we can get more involved if we win. Then when participation rates are up, we can expand back to Vic. Melbourne’s market is just so tough at the moment.

I definitely see where you’re coming from but in my opinion its not so much about decreasing it’s footprint but more about more successful franchises. In theory, it’s better to have 3 teams in with a titles chance and potentially 1 not amongst the franchises, compared to 2 and 3 not. It’s a trade off between footprint and depth. I think it’s a matter of cost reduction as well, Rebels are losing money and will always struggle in the Victorian sporting market. But definitely see your point, it’s certainly not ideal to cut any team. Thanks for giving us some feedback and thoughts!

But we still won more. The improvement from the Australian sides was substantial and maybe when the game is in a better spot in the future we may add the Rebels again, but until then, let’s maintain our grasp on strongholds and then expand again.

It’s about the competition. If they’re competing with each other, they can become better players. But you’re right there’s that risk, but you would be smart with where you send the players.

Statistically they were. They won 8 more matches combined in 2018 (29) than in 2017 (21) when the Force existed. Every Australian team won more games in 2018. It’s a trade off, depth or size of pathways. I think for now we must go with depth.

Some great thinking here. I just don’t think NZ Rugby would a agree to funding an Australian pathway, would be counter productive for them. It could also lead to below Super Rugby level players playing in Super Rugby, leaving the team uncompetitive. But nevertheless you don’t know what will happen unless it’s implemented, would be interesting what path it would take us down! Thanks for giving us your opinion!
