I've tried my hand at everything rugby. My serious playing ceased 40 years ago. My social playing, Fifths with my brothers, finished 30 years ago. I've refed, managed and been a delegate to the QRFSU. I've taught rugby as a school subject to boys and girls and I am still coaching schoolboys with an old mate, Got to loves the 4th's. I agree with the old colonial powers, spread rugby and develop leaders for the future in the community. You don't have to be 1st XV or a rep player to be a leader.

G’day Peter. Happy New Year.
And what a better way to start the year than with a fullback! 😛
I’ll admit that I’m old school. If you stop a team from scoring, you only have to score once to win ( but you can score as many times as your attack allows). The Wallabies could score tries, but it was their defence that allowed their successes in ‘84, ‘91 and ‘99. That and fitness.
Blanco was beautiful to watch. Beautiful but frustrating from an Aussie point of view, as you skilfully pointed out. 😡
And if Blanco and Campese were playing on the same team? 1) Don’t give them a sniff of the ball; 2) run the ball to Campese’s side, two defenders you wouldn’t be overly concerned about; 3) don’t give them a sniff of the ball!!! 😂

And if that long-term, 4 year contracted coach is not the one to lead us… well just say, “Hello Eddie”.
'Too much respect for Joe': Kiss commits to Queensland as Wallabies coaching circus continues
G’day TWAS. I wonder what the arguments would be if Joe had not been as successful as he has been.

That’s some crystal ball you’ve got working for you there, KPM.

Could be time to quit the Giteau law. If a player is playing in a quality competition at an acceptable personal level, then he should be eligible to play for the Wallabies. Bringing these players in is no different to having players join from the SR sides to make a Wallaby unit.
Australian Rugby has a marvelous future, provided we move with the modern trends and pressures from within and abroad.
'Opportunities everywhere': McReight's warning for RA to get serious as Wallabies gun targets big Super season
G’day piru.
My solution goes a bit further. It’s a game played in real time. I’ve said before, just get rid of the TMO altogether. We must go back to respecting “the sole judge of time and fact”.
If people can’t cope with such a “radical” idea, then the TMO can rule on the grounding of the ball for tries, in real-time speed, because that’s what the ref and the rest of us see, and the broadcasters DO NOT replay in slow motion on TV or at the ground.
If there is a suspect action of foul play that is not picked up by the three on-field officials, they can refer it at the time, then this can be handled by a post-match review committee. The committee can cite an incident themselves or have an incident referred to them by the TMO. The post-match review committee can use slow-motion. Nobody wants thugs to think they can get away with anything.
Mack Hansen banned and his ref target quits after f-bomb blow-up
“ The high stakes nature of the game, and the money that is on the line for stakeholders – ” Are they finding a cure for cancer? Making sure there are enough qualified teachers in classrooms? Are they ensuring world peace and respect?
Maybe some should remember that we are talking about a game, as important as it might be for some national/tribal pride, played by people and officiated by people with all their faults.
The contest goes for 80 minutes. Life goes on for, hopefully, much longer after the full-time whistle.

You’re right there UF. Finau was committed to the “tackle”. And he didn’t care whether Lynagh had the ball or not, he was coming from Lynagh’s blind side and was going to hit him, no matter what! That’s commitment.
'Can't shy away from it': Lynagh opens up on being 'targeted', Reds 'vibe', injuries and Lions goals
Lots of building with plenty of seats, that’s for sure.
My problem is, how often, after the big event/s, will these “colosseums” be filled?
Broncos and Dolphins do a pretty good job of getting big crowds, sure SOO, the Roar during their premiership days and 2011 for the Reds. But Education and Health need some serious money being spent and if it goes on stadia, then the state’s population loses out and can we really afford that?
And it has already started. It is said that Queensland will start the new school year 4000 teachers short of what it needs. As a retired teacher, whose children have passed through Year 12, I no longer have any “skin in the game” but I ask this, is it better to have a/many wonderful, new, glitzy stadia, that will, for the majority of the time feel like cold, half empty, soul-less arena or your children in resonably populated classrooms with the opportunity to fulfil their potential?

Qld made a country tour of the state in 1981. I watched them play a Mt Isa selection. The Isa boys did everything they could, but O’Connor just carved them up. He was something special, and wasted in league on the wing.
Sir John Kirwan was a brilliant winger - his work in mental health proved his character
Seeing as O’Connor played mainly 13 in rugby, which doesn’t disqualify him as a beautiful runner, there is no hesitation putting Tune in there. Actually, I say he was at least the equal of Campese for his running. Then add his battles with Lomu, it’s an aspect that Campese didn’t have to battle with.
In general, one of the great characteristics of Aussie wingers is that they are rarely bettered by their opposite number. Aussies aren’t just wingers, they’re rugby players.

G’day Monorchid. Not sure if it has continued, but I remember reading somewhere, maybe a long time ago now, that new stadia in the US were being made with smaller seating capacity due to the increase in numbers watching on Pay-TV rather than going to the venues. The pay-off between “bums on seats” and share of TV rights I presume.
Nice to hear from you. Happy New Year.

So, 52,000 is not big enough for a semi? I understand that these decisions have a very heavy WR influence. Large stadia may be easy to come by in Europe, but WR should have some common sense about the nations where the games are being played. And not be quite so selfish when charging the host nations the reprehensible fees for conducting the competition.

G’day Peter. Happy New Year!
Mental health issues, as we know, can be quite debilitating. That two men could continue to play at the level they achieved while suffering is a testament to their own strength. You’re left to ponder what might have been possible if their condition had been recognised and treated.
I may have mentioned in the past that I believe that Brendan Moon is the most gifted runner I have seen playing in Australia, closely followed by Michael O’Conner then David Campese. Sir John Kerrin would rate alongside Brendan Moon. He always presented a challenge whether playing for Auckland against Q’ld or for the ABs when playing the Wallabies.
On those few moments when an Aussie was able to watch impartially, he was a joy to behold.

Joe Schmidt has shown the way forward in 2024 and a Lions triumph is possible - this is how he can do it
G’day Nick. Season’s Greetings to you and yours.
Mrs Busted thought so little of rugby that we didn’t become engaged until I had retired from serious play. However, she is a mad keen fan of our son, the referee, and much prefers to watch the women’s game over the men. It certainly is where the future of our game stands at the moment. And with positive people, such as Ms Maher, the sky’s the limit.
I will also add that, while they may not have the same digital presence, I think we have a couple of sisters in Australia who are helping to build the profile of the women’s game worldwide.
Ilona Maher is changing rugby forever - here’s why you should pay attention to her
G’day Harry.
Firstly, Season’s greetings to you and yours.
Secondly, thanks for all the thought-provoking articles over the last year.
Thirdly, if Joe does not renew, do you think that what he has done and put in place will be enough for the next coach, and not just Les Kiss, but any other, to take lessons from and continue the Wallabies’ journey along the same route?
Finally, did you see that Rugby Canada has contracted Steve Meehan, one of those Australian coaches I bang on about, for the next two seasons?

To you, Roar staff, Roarers and families, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
The 20 biggest stories in Australian rugby this year - but is a bigger one still about to drop?
At one stage, WR was ALL about safety. I haven’t heard any reduction of that stance. So when a shoulder strikes a head, you expect something to happen, even more so if there is an HIA involved.

I’ve got another one for you.
Roarers will no doubt be a bit sick of my comments about Aussie coaches overseas being ignored by RA after they have gone and attained the experience RA crave only to promote coaches from within.
Well, there was another announcement over the weekend. Rugby Canada has announced, though it was not picked up in Australia, that Brisbane based Stephen Meehan has been contracted to be the new national Men’s 15s coach.
And another Australian coach slips away.
