Hi Nick!

I can’t wait; thanks in advance for all your efforts, content, and genuine insights into the game!

Geez, the Reds have been busy, and from a Head Office point of view, it is great to see them spreading the brand and adding value to their fans by keeping the Reds playing as much as possible.

Love it!

Love my Super Rugby!!

Exclusive: Rugby Australia plot new third-tier competition involving Super teams

I went to a Newington a couple of years ago, and a parent told me then “He has signed with the Tigers”

More interested in that number 8 to be honest

I agree, players should come into Super Rugby season ready to go; the comp is meant to be an elite level comp, and the season is perfect IMO. It won’t be expanded and it does not need to.

The third tier should be, as you say, SR without Wallabies, and get these boys playing. All they do is train at the moment.

Also with Club rugby, a lot of these clubs don’t own their grounds, so trying to play “outside” the club window will be interesting

'Won't go lock, stock and barrel': RA chair reveals our Giteau Law promise to NZ, flags 64-man Spring Tour squad

Agree

Clearly players don’t play enough games here, and taking 64 players on tour is odd. But we need our players to play more games. Locally, the problem is not SR or even Club Rugby; it is the bridge and how to align those, as we all know.

It baffles me that we don’t have any footy other than wallabies until next year; Force and Reds are doing their thing with tours; in the meantime, the Tahs are training for the next 6 months.

I guess Australia A program is a way forward, but I agree, the money could be spent elsewhere.

SR is for developing players; we need it as no other comp in Australia will prepare you for those games in Fiji or Wellington against top teams.

What they need to do is put some of that money into a Club comp after SR and have Club rugby and SR as it is.

'Won't go lock, stock and barrel': RA chair reveals our Giteau Law promise to NZ, flags 64-man Spring Tour squad

Way too passive in defense, and we allowed the AB to dictate the game early on. Let’s face the ABs were always going to score points, but our defense did not show up in the first half and made it so easy for them to make meters.

Proud of the second half BUT we still lost, and that sucks.

Korobeite, time to go, mate. I always liked him, but you have to know when your time is up. I would much rather see Toole given the opportunity, AND Pietch offers so much more; he has the pace and the size. Killing in Japan does not mean you are going to play well against the big boys in test rugby.

White, great player but well behind Gordon and Tate.

Noah, take some time off and think about how you want to play, there is a good player there, but how many opportunities does he get?! I am not saying that the other 10s are breathing down his neck, but give someone else the same opportunities

I think what needs fixing is the DUMB plays and the defense, not necessarily the players; we give away so many points through port restarts and stupid plays (Just before halftime, why didn’t they kick the ball down the field after that scrum? Lucky they disallowed the try)

Wallabies Bledisloe ratings: Back-row stands up, Koroibete under pump to keep spot as bench delivers

I have always been a fan of Koroibete, but I have to admit he doesn’t have the gas anymore, and he runs around like a headless chook. I was hoping to see Corey Toole there.

Spot on!

Also they come up with a NRC comp, and the Sydney clubs carry on like is the end of the world,

If there was going to be a national comp, who stays and who goes? Honestly, do we really see the likes of Many? East, Randwick, and co supporting a national club comp where some of them will have to give up their spot?

'Don't give up': Cheika urges RA to exit Super Rugby and 'go it alone', says lack of strategy killing game in Australia

Well, the broadcast deal pays for it …

What is your suggestion, then? Pour into Clubd rugby? What’s the average crowd for a club game? 200 – 300?

'Don't give up': Cheika urges RA to exit Super Rugby and 'go it alone', says lack of strategy killing game in Australia

Yep, and they are the same ones that don’t pay for Stan. I literally had a conversation with someone Saturday, who was carrying on about how great Club rugby is blah blah, but he got in for free off course. I mentioned I didn’t follow a team in particular, but I was fond of the two blues. I won’t repeat what was said after that, BUT there wasn’t much emphasis on “Growing” the game from his end

'Don't give up': Cheika urges RA to exit Super Rugby and 'go it alone', says lack of strategy killing game in Australia

Well, I don’t want to speak for the previous regimes, but I believe the current leadership has one. They know they have to. In any case, until there is money to spend it will be much of the same

'Don't give up': Cheika urges RA to exit Super Rugby and 'go it alone', says lack of strategy killing game in Australia

And who is going to pay for it?

Hardly anyone watches club rugby on TV, so I doubt the TV rights would be great. I can only speak for myself here, but I love SR and care very little about Club Rugby, I attended the SS final last Saturday and was underwhelmed with the attendance for a final.

This type of article comes up every few months, but honestly, I have yet to hear from someone who can come up with an actual solution. And I am talking about people that have the smarts and are in the know.

Here is what I think, though: since we are broke until the next WC, there is no chance of going at it alone, BUT I do believe that the RA has a plan in place once they can actually afford it.

And can you tell me what “Local” coach can step up and coach the Wallabies?

I can’t think of one coach, and obviously, I am not alone. If there had been one, they would have picked him already.

Unfortunately, we don’t have the coaching pathways.

And to my earlier point, most of the OS based players don’t perform, don’t know what it is but obviously the current coaching set up does not see value in bringing them back.

No place for interlopers in Wallabies - and if Schmidt doesn't understand that, he can't call himself Australian

Hi Christy.

Are these long term signings or just for 2025?

CONFIRMED: Tahs land RWC winner as part of proven coaching team as Super Rugby's biggest flops finally fire back

Thank you,

I could disagree with a couple but fair point. In saying this Koroibete and Kerevi are the only two OS based players that are playing at the moment.

I hear Kerevi is not doing well, can’t think of any others that would add value to be honest, yet to see Skelton kill it in gold

No place for interlopers in Wallabies - and if Schmidt doesn't understand that, he can't call himself Australian

Honest question, but how many OS-based players have come into the Wallabies and performed to THE expectations?

I would say 2 or 3 MAX, everyone else was pretty average, and since those 2 – 3 players will likey be in the squad… well end of story really

No place for interlopers in Wallabies - and if Schmidt doesn't understand that, he can't call himself Australian

How about some credit to Georgia?!

They played a good game, and even though a couple of their tries were fortunate, the bounce of the ball going their way, well, you make your own luck!

That 100 metre try they scored, for instance, I was sitting right on that corner and I am sure he was trying to kick the ball into touch, the wind keep the ball in, BUT he chased the kick and good on him!

I am sure Lancaster won’t be as passive next time, he will learn his lesson… Just like Liam Williams and Co would have learned their lessons with that second Daungunu try last week. It happens in footy! In any case, it was great to see!

Did we really expect to put Georgia to the sword?! This team is learning how to play properly again, and the Georgians are no pushovers, that is for sure!

I am stoked to be 3 – 0

Ps: I went with a mate who mentioned at the start of the game, “Geez, I have not been to a Wallabies game in 8 – 10 years…” and at the end, he goes, “That was a good game. When is the next one?!”

The crowd had a great time, a good game to watch and we won!

Reds' Super Rugby title hopes given boost as Wallaby re-signs ahead of Wales clash, Petaia set for NFL bid

I’m not across how it works but I’m pretty sure they get a signing bonus and the rest if they see out the contract. They can cut you at any time and you walk away with nothing. Someone else might be able to clarify but he does t get the 4 mill straight up. And if he gets cut they do t have to pay him out. That’s why a lot of nfl players go broke, they spend money they don’t have upfront.

Reds' Super Rugby title hopes given boost as Wallaby re-signs ahead of Wales clash, Petaia set for NFL bid

A lot of good points, and I don’t necessarily disagree with bringing OS player back, but I hear Kerevi is not really setting the world on fire.

As far as getting out of Jail? I think you have to make your own luck; the boys competed hard at every line out, and it paid off.

In any case, the Wallabies were in absolute shambles under “You know who,” and so far this year, they look much better coached and capable of winning games

Credit to the Welsh also for not giving up after 0 – 17

The Wallabies got out of jail against Wales - they must turn to overseas but there's one great positive

Thanks for the insights,

I think the question is about what clubs can potentially survive or thrive in a national competition. The truth is some clubs don’t appear to be well equipped to be at the next level.

Personally, I would never replace Super Rugby with another comp, as A I love the the product and B the standard is much higher than club rugby. We would never be able to compete with the rest of the pack if we don’t have a comp like SR, but that is a separate topic.

What I never understood is why Club rugby doesn’t start at the end of SR, and occupy that “void” at the end of the year. I suppose they have their reasons.

The trick here is whatever happens next will need time to develop, in fact years to build a sustainable module, fans and sponsors. A national club comp cannot have every existing team. So who goes and who stays?

In any case SR is here to stay but hope a “Third” tier option, whatever that might look like is next on the agenda

'Best interests of the game': Why Brumbies fell in line after rejecting RA advances - and 'open door' to interstate matches

Honest question here,
What is a “Great crowd” for club rugby? I am not having a dig; I am just curious as to what a good crowd for a club game is.
I watched a bit of club footy over the weekend, waiting for the Test matches to start, and my guess is the best-attended games were a few hundred. There was one in Brisbane that looked well attended for a club game, and the Warringah game in Sydney had a few but was far from full. The rest could not tell as it looked pretty empty (At least from the TV camera angle)
I honestly would like to know what a recent number would be and if they make much money, if any. I would assume there are a lot of players from other grades in attendance, so they would be paying spectators.
Someone pointed out in another forum that the gate takings for 2023 for East in Syndye was just under a 100k for the year, which was approx 650 paying fans per game.
Ps: I would love a national club comp AFTER Super Rugby, but the question would be what clubs are profitable enough or have enough engagement to make the cut. You could not run a Club comp with every club in the country.
