St George Illawarra have struck a blow on rivals Cronulla with rising playmaker Dan Atkinson set to switch clubs on a lucrative three-year deal.

Atkinson was a revelation for the Sharks last season when filling in for Nicho Hynes and Braydon Trindall at five-eghth.

Off contract at the end of next season, he has agreed to terms on a $1.5 million deal with the Dragons, according to a NewsCorp report for 2026 onwards.

Trindall recently re-signed long term at the Sharks and Hynes is under contract until the end of 2029 so Atkinson has a path to a permanent first-grade spot blocked at his current club.

The Dragons need to shore up their playmaking stocks following the departure of captain Ben Hunt to the Broncos.

They have signed ex-Rabbitohs half Lachlan Ilias on a two-year deal while coach Shane Flanagan’s son Kyle is set to return at five-eighth after a strong first season at the club following an unhappy stint at Canterbury.

Cronulla are facing a salary cap squeeze after Trindall, Kiwi forward Briton Nikora and prop Oregon Kaufusi extended their tenure while Warriors star Addin Fonua-Blake has recently arrived at the club on a big-money deal.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have emerged as the frontrunners to sign New Zealand forward Leo Thompson if he leaves the Knights although Canberra have also weighed in with a hefty offer.
